Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 11/16/2001
This is the belated voice of NJ Audubon for Friday, November 16 at 10:00 a.m. with reports of review list species CALIFORNIA GULL, THAYER'S GULL, and CAVE SWALLOW, plus ICELAND, GLAUCOUS and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, SNOWY OWLS, and other seasonal and local reports of interest.

A CALIFORNIA GULL was reported at Florence on Saturday November 10. The bird was not refound on Tuesday November 13, but huge numbers of gulls were present that day including a juvenile (first-winter) THAYER'S GULL, an apparent second-winter THAYER'S GULL, 6 or 7 young ICELAND GULLS, 1 GLAUCOUS GULL, and many LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.

A CAVE SWALLOW was found in Cape May on November 9. Other birds in Cape May this week included RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, COMMON EIDER, KING EIDER, and COMMON REDPOLL.

A RAZORBILL passed the Avalon Sea Watch on Thursday, November 15.

A SNOWY OWL was discovered at Island Beach State Park on Monday, November 12, perched on a dune fence post about 2/10 of a mile north of Barnegat Inlet. Another or the same SNOWY OWL was on Gulf Point, the northeastern point of Barnegat National Wildlife Refuge, on Thursday November 8.

WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported at several locations this week. In addition to the birds at Cape May, 12 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were at Ringwood Manor November 10-11, and others were at Bayberry Beach at Sandy Hook on November 10 and along Bellevue Road in Phillipsburg on November 9.

An immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was on the West Trail at Lenape Park in Cranford on November 13.

A waterfowl survey at Great Swamp NWR on November 8 found over 600 WOOD DUCKS plus small numbers of AMERICAN COOT, NORTHERN PINTAIL, and GREEN-WINGED TEAL, and single AMERICAN BITTERN and GREAT EGRET.

Scherman-Hoffman Sanctuaries in Bernardsville on November 16 had PINE SISKIN, PURPLE FINCH, and 3 FOX SPARROWS at the feeders.
