Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 11/17/2005
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday Nov 17, 2005 with reports of BARNACLE GOOSE, CAVE SWALLOW, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, RED PHALAROPE, WESTERN KINGBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was discovered at Assunpink WMA Nov 12 and was present until at least Nov 16. From the junction of Imlaystown & Herbert Rds, go north on Imlaystown Rd and make a left just before reaching the gravel parking lot at the lake. Follow this road through a short stretch of woods until it opens to a fork, the left fork being blocked by a gate. Look for the bird in this area. The bird has also been seen just north of here, between the parking lot with guardrails and the lake. Lake Assunpink hosted 2 TUNDRA SWANS and 2 drake REDHEADS Nov 14.

Brigantine NWR had 3 CAVE SWALLOWS along the south dike over the West Pool Nov 12. Also at Brig Nov 11 were 2 AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS in the East Pool.

A BARNACLE GOOSE was observed at the Allendale Celery Farm Nov 13no reports since. Also there this week were 6 AMERICAN BITTERNS and VIRGINIA RAIL.

The immature RUFOUS/ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD in Verga, Gloucester County continues through at least Nov 15. The homeowner is willing to have birders visitplease be considerate and discreet when parking and viewing the bird. From Rte 295 south take exit 23. At the top of the ramp, turn right onto Hessian. Make the next right onto Pedan in about 1/10 of a mile, then the next right onto Brewer. The house is the second on the right, with a white picket fence (address is 1076 Brewer Ave). Walk up the driveway to the backyard. The feeder is hanging from the roof of the porch. Also check the flowers in the yard for the bird (DeLorme P. 54, F-5).

Two FRANKLIN'S GULLS, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, and CAVE SWALLOWS were found in Cape May this weekcall the CMBO Birding Hotline for details.

Sussex County reports this week included an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Culver's Lake, BARRED OWL at Kuser Bog in High Point State Park, and 90+ AMERICAN PIPITS, 50+ AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, and 5 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS at the Liberty Loop trail in Wallkill River NWR.

Highlights from the Raccoon Ridge hawkwatch this week included 225 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 4 GOLDEN EAGLES, and 3 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS Nov 10; 12 GOLDEN EAGLES, 8 BALD EAGLES, 5 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, and 13 RED- SHOULDERED HAWKS were tallied there Nov 11.

A WESTERN KINGBIRD was discovered along Pleasant Plains Rd in the Great Swamp NWR Nov 13.

Sandy Hook sightings this week were of an AMERICAN BITTERN at Spermaceti Cove Nov 11, a calling VIRGINIA RAIL at North Pond, a late BROAD-WINGED HAWK Nov 13, a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK at the locust grove Nov 16, a BARN OWL at dusk near Horseshoe Cove Nov 14, a SHORT- EARED OWL at Plum Island Nov 11 & 13, 30+ SNOW BUNTINGS at North Beach Nov 11, and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR on the beach between lots C & D Nov 17. A drake EURASIAN WIGEON was found in Rumson in the pond at the intersection of Navesink Ave and Ridge Rds Nov 16.

Island Beach State Park highlights Nov 13 included RED-NECKED GREBE, 4 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 6 COMMON EIDERS, 3 RED PHALAROPES, and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL.
