Thursday November 2, 2006 with reports of FRIGATEBIRD species,
SWAINSONS HAWK, CAVE SWALLOW, seasonal and local reports of interest.
A FRIGATEBIRD species was a fly-by at the Cape May convention center
Oct 28 -- no reports since. Also in Cape May this week were
SWAINSONS HAWK, EURASIAN COLLARED-DOVE, and CAVE SWALLOW -- call the
CMBO Birding Hotline for details.
Brigantine NWR sightings Oct 27 & 29 included 9 TUNDRA SWANS,
AMERICAN BITTERN, VIRGINIA RAIL, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, HUDSONIAN
GODWIT, 5 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, and 3 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS. Sixty
TUNDRA SWANS, 2 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, AMERICAN PIPIT, and 8 SNOW
BUNTINGS were noted Nov 2.
Four BROWN PELICANS and an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER were noted at
Island Beach State Park Oct 27. At Barnegat Inlet 5 HARLEQUIN DUCKS,
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, 3 BROWN PELICANS, 11 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, and 2
SNOW BUNTINGS were found Oct 31.
Sandy Hook reports this week were of a good passerine flight Oct 27
including 26 WINTER WRENS, 2 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, 120 HERMIT
THRUSHES, IPSWICH SPARROW, and 5 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS. A first-year
BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE was found in Spermaceti Cove Oct 28. Birds
found Nov 1 included two REDHEADS on North Pond, AMERICAN GOLDEN-
PLOVER, 4 NELSONS SHARP-TAILED SPARROWS, and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW
at Spermaceti Cove; AMERICAN BITTERN, an immature RED-HEADED
WOODPECKER at the Gunnison Lot, and flyover AMERICAN PIPITS, RUSTY
BLACKBIRD, and PINE SISKIN at North Beach. A free, detailed birding

At the Columbus Sod Farm in Burlington County CLAY-COLORED SPARROW
and GRASSHOPPER SPARROW were observed Oct 31. A DICKCISSEL was noted
at Palmyra Oct 30.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was observed over Laurel Hill Park in Secaucus Oct 29.
Cold Brook Preserve in Tewksbury hosted 4 VESPER SPARROWS Nov 2. An
immature GOLDEN EAGLE was observed over Spruce Run Reservoir Oct 30.
Raptors found at Raccoon Ridge this week included 6 GOLDEN EAGLES Oct 29
Culvers Lake in Sussex County had a BLACK SCOTER and 4 WHITE-WINGED
SCOTERS Oct 28.
Allendale Celery Farm notables this week included LESSER SCAUP, BLUE-
HEADED VIREO, 6 AMERICAN PIPITS, multiple RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and 2
SNOW BUNTINGS. Also in Bergen County was the continuing adult RED-
HEADED WOODPECKER in Ridgewood. The bird is at the duck pond on the
north side of East Ridgewood Ave between Paramus Rd and Pershing
Ave. Park in the lot between Areas B & C; the bird is active in the
area between the restrooms and the pavilion.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was found at the Teaneck Creek Conservancy
Oct 31. This relatively new park is very close to the former
Overpeck dump area http://www.teaneckcreek.org
A YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT was found at the Walker Ave Wetlands in Wayne
