This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday November 21, 2012 with reports of BLACK BRANT, EURASIAN WIGEON, ICELAND GULL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, COMMON REDPOLL, seasonal and local reports of interest.

A NORTHERN SHRIKE was discovered at Kittatinny Valley State Park in Sussex County Nov 17. The bird was near the Twin Lakes boat launch and moved to the field near the campground. Also there was a CACKLING GOOSE on White Pond.

Scott's Mountain Hawk Watch/Merrill Creek Reservoir had a first-cycle ICELAND GULL, 2 RED CROSSBILLS, 3 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, and COMMON REDPOLL Nov 17. Two juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWKS were tallied Nov 18 and a RED-THROATED LOON was on the reservoir that day. Two juvenile GOLDEN EAGLES and 10 COMMON REDPOLLS were recorded Nov 15.

Hunterdon County reports this week included a RED CROSSBILL at Point Mountain Nov 19, up to 3 COMMON REDPOLLS at Spruce Run Reservoir Nov 16 & 20, and 6-10 RED CROSSBILLS and a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL along Sanatorium Rd in Glen Gardner Nov 17.


Glenhurst Meadows in Warren hosted 4 COMMON REDPOLLS Nov 17.

Six flyover RED CROSSBILLS, 4 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS, and 3 COMMON REDPOLLS were detected at Chimney Rock Nov 17.

A female EURASIAN WIGEON continues at Darlington Lake in Mahwah through Nov 17.

Liberty State Park hosted 2 COMMON REDPOLLS and 3 RED CROSSBILLS Nov 19.

Six COMMON REDPOLLS were noted at Watchung Reservation Nov 16.

An immature RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted at NJ Audubon's Scudder Sanctuary in Middletown Nov 19.

Two BLACK BRANT were among a flock of ATLANTIC BRANT along Marine Place in Deal Nov 18.

Taylor's Refuge in Burlington County had 2 COMMON REDPOLLS Nov 17. At nearby Palmyra Cove Nature Park a late AMERICAN REDSTART was noted Nov 19 and 10 COMMON REDPOLLS were found Nov 18.

Twenty WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were feeding briefly in the pines at Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR's main parking lot Nov 20.

Salem County reports this week included 2 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS near the intersection of King's Hwy (Rte 620) and Haines Neck Rd Nov 18 and 3 SANDHILL CRANES at Mannington Marsh Nov 17.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many favored birding locations are currently closed to the public or have limited access. A partial list follows.

NJ Meadowlands/Dekorte Environment Center is closed.

Great Swamp NWR still has some closed areas, but Pleasant Plains Road is open as are the Orange, Green, Silver, and Beige Trails. For updates see http://www.friendsofgreatswamp.org

Sandy Hook (Gateway National Recreation Area) is closed.
