Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 11/22/2006
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Wednesday November 22, 2006 with reports of EARED GREBE, SWAINSONS HAWK, CAVE SWALLOW, HENSLOWS SPARROW, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, seasonal and local reports of interest and announcements.

Two EARED GREBES have returned for another winter at Lakes Bay near Atlantic City, seen through Nov 19. From the intersection of Rte 9 and Rtes 40/322, go east on Rtes 40/322 about a mile to Cordova Ave and turn right. Drive a short distance on Cordova to the bay; look for the birds here (DeLorme P. 71, G-16). They have also been noted from nearby Genoa Ave.

A HENSLOWS SPARROW was detected at Sandy Hook Nov 18 at the old tennis court field just southeast of K-lot; no reports since. Also at the hook over the weekend were all three scoters, including 12 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS off C-lot, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT north of Gunnison Lot, and 75+ SNOW BUNTINGS.

SWAINSONS HAWK and CAVE SWALLOW were found in Cape May this week; see the NJBIRDS list archives for details.

Ten AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were found on the Navesink River near the Oceanic Bridge Nov 18 and presumably the same flock relocated to Shark River Estuary later that day and remained through Nov 19. The birds were viewed off the end of Marconi Rd.

Barnegat Light State Park hosted 35+ COMMON EIDERS, 7 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, and numerous PURPLE SANDPIPERS Nov 18.

The SEDGE WREN found last week near the bridge to nowhere at Manahawkin WMA was seen again Nov 18.

In Hunterdon County a CACKLING GOOSE was found this week at Assiscong Marsh and a RED-NECKED GREBE was noted on Spruce Run Reservoir Nov 19.

Weekend highlights at Raccoon Ridge included 6 GOLDEN EAGLES Nov 19, 5 GOLDEN EAGLES and 233 RED-TAILED HAWKS Nov 18, 6 COMMON RAVENS, and SNOW BUNTING.

The Sussex County Landfill hosted an ICELAND GULL and LESSER BLACK- BACKED GULL Nov 21.
