Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 11/23/1994
This is the voice of NJ Audubon for Wednesday, Nov. 23, 1994 at noon with reports of GYRFALCON, HARLEQUIN DUCK, EURASIAN WIGEON, COMMON EIDER, PARASITIC JAEGER, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, LONG-EARED OWL, SHORT-EARED OWL, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and seasonal and local reports. A white-phase GYRFALCON was reported over Bloomingdale Sunday Nov. 20, through a car sun-roof; not reported since. A male HARLEQUIN DUCK was at Sandy Hook Nov. 20 and 21 behind the auditorium on the bay side, as last year. At Island Beach State Park Nov. 18-19, there were six COMMON EIDER, 2 HARLEQUINS off the north side of the north jetty, PURPLE SANDPIPER, PARASITIC JAEGER, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, ROYAL TERN, a BARN OWL in the Peregrine box visible from Spizzle Creek blind, and a flyover SHORT-EARED OWL over the inlet on Nov. 19. Two different EURASIAN WIGEONS were on the north shore this week: a molting bird between McCreery Park and Marconi Road at Shark River; and another male moving between Franklin Lake and Lake Takanassee. Marconi Road Nov. 19 also had an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 25 GREATER YELLOWLEGS, a few DUNLIN, the usual ducks and 20+ Great Blue Herons. HOODED MERGANSERS were on L. Takanassee and on Sylvan Lake in Bradley Beach. Nov. 20 in Great Swamp the BARRED OWL was on the bend at Pleasant Plains Road; a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was on the closed bridge; a FOX SPARROW and several COMMON SNIPE were along the road; and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK was at the heronry. At the Stony Brook - Millstone Watershed Nov. 20 were six BLUEBIRDS, a late Catbird, Tree Sparrow, and an Oregon-type Junco. Another Oregon-type Junco was at a feeder in Lambertville over the weekend. A LAPLAND LONGSPUR is among the larks at Alpha, Warren Co., on Oberly Rd. Buffleheads were on Nomahegan Lake, Kenilworth.
