This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday November 24, 2010 with reports of RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, BLACK BRANT, ROSS'S GOOSE, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, CAVE SWALLOW, seasonal and local reports of interest.
A female RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD is visiting a feeder in Interlaken, Monmouth County Nov 21-24. This is just west of Deal Lake in Asbury Park. The host welcomes birders who wish to see it; please use common sense and discretion when visiting the neighborhood. The address is 419 Grasmere Ave, Interlaken NJ 07712. Best access is to park on Scarba Street and view the feeder from the backyard near the garage.
Other North Shore reports this week included up to 32 COMMON EIDERS, a female and immature male KING EIDER, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, and 15 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS off Deal Nov 21-22; one male and three female REDHEADS on Lake Como through Nov 22; and a probable returning male "Common" GREEN-WINGED TEAL at the third pond in the Lake Takanasee complex Nov 20. Sandy Hook sightings this week included a BLACK BRANT at Plum Island Nov 22, three female KING EIDERS off C-lot and a CAVE SWALLOW over the salt pond Nov 23, a calling NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL near the rusty barn Nov 20, and a late WHITE-EYED VIREO and BALTIMORE ORIOLE Nov 19. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was noted around north pond Nov 20 & 23. Other birds at the hook this week included RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, 10 PINE SISKINS, 8 PURPLE FINCHES, 5 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, and FOX SPARROW. Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE and 3 CACKLING GEESE have been seen on Lake Etra in Twin Rivers, Middlesex County (south of Hightstown) Nov 18-22 (DeLorme P. 43, J-16). Also in Middlesex County was a CAVE SWALLOW flying up and down the beach at South Amboy Nov 20.
Sightings from Brigantine NWR Nov 19-22 included 2 ROSS'S GEESE, 50 TUNDRA SWANS, 17 CANVASBACKS, AMERICAN BITTERN, VIRGINIA RAIL, a juvenile NORTHERN GOSHAWK near gull pond, a lingering AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and a HUDSONIAN GODWIT along the north dike, 2 CAVE SWALLOWS, a late BANK SWALLOW, 25 SNOW BUNTINGS, and a BALTIMORE ORIOLE. A LEAST BITTERN was heard calling at nearby Scott's Landing boat launch Nov 22 and a late SCARLET TANAGER was there Nov 20.
A BROWN PELICAN was noted at Island Beach State Park Nov 18.
Franklin Parker Preserve in Burlington County had an AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, 6 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and 40+ PINE SISKINS Nov 20.
NJ Meadowlands sightings this week included a RING-NECKED PHEASANT and 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS along Valley Brook Dr and Berry's Creek Nov 19 and 5 MONK PARAKEETS at Mill Creek Marsh Nov 23.
A female/immature male-type EURASIAN WIGEON was observed on the pond at Darlington Park in Mahwah Nov 21-23.
A hybrid BARNACLE GOOSE x CANADA GOOSE was photographed on the pond in downtown Califon, Hunterdon County Nov 23.
Six GOLDEN EAGLES passed the Raccoon Ridge Hawk Watch Nov 20.
Sunrise Mountain had 2 GOLDEN EAGLES and a juvenile GOSHAWK Nov 20. A drake REDHEAD, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, RED-THROATED LOON, and 4 HORNED GREBES were found at the causeway at Culver's Lake Nov 18-19.
