This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday November 29, 2012 with reports of RUFOUS/ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, CAVE SWALLOW, NORTHERN SHRIKE, RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, seasonal and local reports of interest.

A RUFOUS/ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD continues to be seen at Palmyra Cove Nature Park in Burlington County. The bird is near the visitor center and is patronizing a feeder set up for it there.
Nine AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were viewed at Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR from the Gull Pond Tower Nov 25 & 28. A CAVE SWALLOW flew past the Leed's Eco-Trail Nov 24. Five AMERICAN WHITE PELICANS were seen from Leed's Point Nov 26.
Birds noted at Barnegat Light State Park/Inlet included a subadult BROWN PELICAN Nov 25-26, 50 COMMON EIDERS, 20+ HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 400+ RED-THROATED LOONS, and 50 PURPLE SANDPIPERS Nov 26.
Salem County reports this week included 5+ SANDHILL CRANES and 8 TUNDRA SWANS at Mannington Marsh Nov 25 and a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was found in a massive mixed-species blackbird flock near the intersection of Haines Neck Rd and Kings Highway Nov 23.
A birder canoeing the Batsto River Nov 23 encountered a flock of 15-20 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS.
Four CAVE SWALLOWS were fly-bys at Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch Nov 24. A light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was a flyby at nearby Lake Takanassee the same day. Further south along the north shore were 7 RED CROSSBILLS at Deal Esplanade in Deal Nov 28.
Two WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were noted at the pond along Navesink Ave in Rumson Nov 25.
Flyover WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL and RED CROSSBILL were noted at Chimney Rock Nov 25.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE has been frequenting the lake at Warinanco Park in Union County through Nov 28. Seven CACKLING GEESE were noted there Nov 27.
Three SANDHILL CRANES were found in Hillsborough Twp Nov 27. The trio was in a corn stubble field at the intersection of Opie Rd and CR 567.
A NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen briefly from the overlook at Pleasant Plains Rd in Great Swamp NWR Nov 28.
Hunterdon County reports this week included a CAVE SWALLOW at Spruce Run Reservoir Nov 22; a late Green Heron Nov 24, four RED-THROATED LOONS Nov 26, and a RED-NECKED GREBE Nov 28. Nine RED CROSSBILLS were noted along Sanatorium Road in Glen Gardner Nov 23. A COMMON REDPOLL was found at Round Valley Reservoir Nov 24.
A drive north on Old Mine Road through the Delaware Water Gap Nov 27 yielded several COMMON REDPOLLS just north of the traffic light, a mixed flock of 30-40 RED CROSSBILLS and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS at Watergate and near Dingman's Bridge, and 14 EVENING GROSBEAKS near the Rosenrancz Ferry north of Flatbrookville.
Four GOLDEN EAGLES were tallied at Raccoon Ridge Hawk Watch Nov 24.
A CAVE SWALLOW was seen at Wallkill River NWR's Liberty Loop impoundments Nov 21.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many favored birding locations are currently closed to the public or have limited access. A partial list follows.
NJ Meadowlands/Dekorte Environment Center is closed. The Mill Creek Marsh Trail in Secaucus is open.
Great Swamp NWR still has some closed areas, but Pleasant Plains Road is open as are the Orange, Green, Silver, and Beige Trails. For updates see http://www.friendsofgreatswamp.org
Sandy Hook (Gateway National Recreation Area) is closed.
