Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 11/3/1999
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Wed Nov 3 with reports of Review List CAVE SWALLOW, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, and reports of JAEGERS, SEDGE WREN, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, EVENING GROSBEAK, WESTERN KINGBIRD, BROWN PELICAN, MARBLED GODWIT, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, SHORT-EARED OWL, NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW, and seasonal and local reports.

The now annual CAVE SWALLOW was seen at the hawkwatch in Cape May Point State Park Nov 1. Also in Cape May over the weekend were several RED CROSSBILLS and WESTERN KINGBIRDS. Some 10 or so PARASITIC JAEGERS and 1 POMARINE were seen at Cape May Point Nov 2.

About 100 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were reported from the Merrill Creek hawkwatch in three flocks on Oct 27, 29 and 30; also at the reservoir this wek were SPOTTED SANDPIPER, SURF SCOTER, HORNED GREBE, COMMON LOON, SNOW BUNTING Nov 1, and also on Nov 1, a BALD EAGLE eating a COOT!

Chimney Rock Oct 25-31 had 1700 hawks including 11 GOLDEN EAGLES, lots of PURPLE FINCHES and PINE SISKINS, a dark ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK hanging around for 2 weeks now, and 20 EVENING GROSBEAKS on Oct 29. An EVENING GROSBEAK was in Tewksbury Nov 1, and at Cold Brook Park in Oldwick Nov 1, there were over 50 WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW (many singing), LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and AMERICAN PIPITS among other birds.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was briefly at Raritan Community College off Rte 22 with CANADA GEESE on Oct 29, but was seen flying off.

Three SEDGE WRENS were seen in the Bass River marshes Oct 30. Barnegat Light Oct 31 had 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, and one BROWN PELICAN. A YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was in Salem County at Hancock's Bridge Oct 31. Two BALD EAGLES were at Manasquan Reservoir Oct 30.

Great Swamp Oct 30 had a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER at the heronry on Pleasant Plains Road, and PECTORAL SANDPIPER and SNIPE at the grassy pool near Headquarters. Alpha had 20 HORNED LARKS Oct 30. Round Valley Oct 30 had 8 waterfowl in the bathing beach, and a HORNED GREBE but no LOONS. Spruce Run Oct 30 had BLACK SCOTER and a flock of PIPITS bathing at the mouth of Spruce Run.

Sandy Hook Nov 1 had a SHORT-EARED OWL at the north end, a WILSON'S WARBLER at Gunnison, NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW at Plum Island, and 16 SNOW BUNTINGS at "E" lot.

Island Beach this week reported TRI-COLORED HERON and AMERICAN BITTERN Oct 29 at Sedge Island, MARBLED GODWIT Oct 31, bayside on the sandbars off Lot A-21, and NELSON'S SHARP-TAILED SPARROW at Sedge Island.

Some 5 NASHVILLE WARBLERS were reported in North Jersey Oct 30-Nov 1. SISKIN and PURPLE FINCH numbers are increasing; on Oct 30, over 100 SISKINS were at Scherman Hoffman. Widely reported this week were FOX SPARROW, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, HERMIT THRUSH, and SAVANNAH SPARROW.
