This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday November 3, 2011 with reports of HARRIS'S SPARROW, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, LARK SPARROW, seasonal and local reports of interest.
A HARRIS'S SPARROW was found at Sandy Hook Nov 1-3. The bird has been present mostly in the field to the left (south side) of K-lot around an old concrete pad west of the dirt road or the fence line bordering the Coast Guard base; it has also been seen at the northwest edge of K-lot along the fence with WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS. A LARK SPARROW was found at K-lot Nov 1. Other birds noted at the hook this week included 36 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS off E-lot Oct 31, AMERICAN BITTERNS at Plum Island and the salt pond, a late GREEN HERON at the salt pond Oct 30, flyover AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER, a RED KNOT at F-lot, COMMON RAVEN at Plum Island Nov 3, ten AMERICAN PIPITS, 19 WINTER WRENS, 2 LINCOLN'S SPARROWS Oct 31, VESPER SPARROW Oct 28, NELSON'S SPARROW at Plum Island, DICKCISSEL Nov 3, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, PINE SISKIN, and PURPLE FINCH. Two HUDSONIAN GODWITS continued at the mudflats adjacent to Lefante Way/Bayonne Golf Club through Oct 31. Also there this week were AMERICAN BITTERN, a late SPOTTED SANDPIPER, VESPER SPARROW, and NELSON'S SPARROW. At nearby Liberty State Park 45+ AMERICAN PIPITS, VESPER SPARROW, and 6 FOX SPARROWS were seen Oct 31. A CATTLE EGRET, VESPER SPARROW, NELSON'S SPARROW, and LINCOLN'S SPARROW were noted Oct 28.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was observed at Overpeck Creek Park in a puddle at the horse stables Nov 1.
Reports from the NJ Meadowlands this week included 90+ GREATER YELLOWLEGS and late STILT SANDPIPER at the shorebird pool at DeKorte, 6 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS and 45 AMERICAN PIPITS at the ball fields along Valley Brook Drive, and a late NASHVILLE WARBLER Oct 29-30.
Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR reports this week were of an AMERICAN AVOCET and 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS Oct 28, a LAPLAND LONGSPUR near the dog-leg Oct 29, a COMMON GALLINULE near the gull pond tower and a SNOW BUNTING along the dikes Oct 30.
Spruce Run Reservoir had GREAT EGRET, PECTORAL SANDPIPER, 10 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, and 40 AMERICAN PIPITS Oct 29.
Three FOX SPARROWS and a DICKCISSEL were seen at Great Swamp NWR Oct 28 between the bridge on Pleasant Plains Rd and the overlook. A GOLDEN EAGLE was noted there Nov 2.
Raccoon Ridge highlights this week included 10 BALD EAGLES, 11 GOLDEN EAGLES, 15 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, and 7 SNOW BUNTINGS Oct 30; a PINE SISKIN was a fly-by Oct 31.
A LONG-TAILED DUCK and BLACK SCOTER were on Culver's Lake Oct 28.
A WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was found at Whitesbog Oct 30.
Wheelabrator Refuge in Gloucester County Nov 2 had an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, VESPER SPARROW, and 2 FOX SPARROWS.
