Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 11/30/2006
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday November 30, 2006 with reports of EARED GREBE, RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.

Two EARED GREBES continued this week at Lakes Bay near Atlantic City, seen as recently as Nov 27. From the intersection of Rte 9 and Rte 40/322, go east on Rtes 40/322 about a mile to Cordova Ave and turn right. Drive a short distance on Cordova to the bay: look for the birds here (DeLorme P. 71, G-16). On Nov 27 one bird was just offshore of Athens Ave.

At nearby at Brigantine NWR this week were 250 TUNDRA SWANS, RED- NECKED GREBE, 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS, a juvenile COMMON MOORHEN, 3 "Ipswich" SAVANNAH SPARROWS, and a late BALTIMORE ORIOLE Nov 26.

Barnegat Light State Park hosted 100+ COMMON EIDERS, 10+ HARLEQUIN DUCKS, a first-year LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and PURPLE SANDPIPERS Nov 25.

A birder hitching a ride on a wreck-fishing trip from Manasquan Inlet Nov 26 recorded NORTHERN FULMAR and 25+ BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES around the Mud Hole.

Sandy Hook reports this week included a LAPLAND LONGSPUR with the SNOW BUNTING & HORNED LARK flock near north beach Nov 23-24. A COMMON EIDER was found off the ferry dock at the north end of Officer's Row Nov 26 along with an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at the scout camp the same day. All three species of scoter including 6 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS have been present off C-lot this week. A NORTHERN GOSHAWK flew past K-lot Nov 30. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily reports.

Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were seen again in Rahway River Park this week off Saint Georges Ave in the grove of oak trees near the restrooms and to the left of the playground.

At Great Swamp NWR the NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen again on Nov 24 & 27. The bird was viewed in the field to the west of Pleasant Plains Rd halfway between the heron rookery parking lot and the bridge at the end of the road. Watch for the bird around the drainage ditch that crosses the road there; late afternoon may be a good time to look. A "Harlan's/dark-morph type" RED-TAILED HAWK was viewed near the dog-leg along Pleasant Plains Road Nov 27.

At Lincoln Park West in Jersey City an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and two PALM WARBLERS were discovered Nov 29.

In Chester Twp a SANDHILL CRANE was found Nov 25 at Highland Ridge Park.

In Sussex County a NORTHERN SHRIKE (possibly a returning bird) was found along the trees and phone lines near the intersection of Rtes 615 & 640 just south of Layton Nov 27. (DeLorme P 18, I-10). In Lafayette at the Sussex County Landfill two immature ICELAND GULLS and an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL were noted Nov 28.

Birders wishing to visit the Sussex County Landfill must do the following to ensure continued access to the site. Please abide by the following rules set forth by the landfill: Park in the Administration Building parking lot (on the left after you enter from Rte 94) and sign in at the registration desk on the second floor. Then walk back up almost to Rte 94 and go left at the orange fire hydrant to the top of the hill by the water tank. Birders are NOT ALLOWED to bird from the roads in the landfill or to go up on the old landfill. When leaving, be sure to sign out at the registration desk. Open hours are 7 am - 2pm Mon - Sat. Failure to follow these rules could result in the site being closed to all birding.
