This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday November 4, 2010 with reports of WHITE-TAILED KITE, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, SHORT-EARED OWL, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.

A WHITE-TAILED KITE was again reported at the Barnegat Impoundments of Forsythe NWR in Ocean County. The bird was seen perched on an island in the impoundment west of the public beach parking area on Bayshore Drive. Note that this is Barnegat Twp on the mainland in Ocean County, not on Long Beach Island.

Sandy Hook reports this week included heavy flights of sparrows Oct 29 & Nov 1. A LE CONTE'S SPARROW was seen in the field along the south side of Gunnison Rd Oct 29 -- no reports since. Two BLUE-HEADED VIREOS, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT, 22 PURPLE FINCHES and 11 PINE SISKINS were noted Oct 29. Up to 4-5 Vesper Sparrows were present around the k-lot field Oct 30-31. A LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen along Gunnison Rd and an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was detected at north pond Oct 30. A BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER was near the rusty barn Oct 31. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at the tidal cut Oct 31. The Nov 1 passerine flight included 10 WINTER WRENS, 200+ HERMIT THRUSHES, 11 EASTERN BLUEBIRDS, FOX SPARROW, 500+ SONG SPARROWS, 800 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS, 1,500 DARK-EYED JUNCOS, 3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS, and 13 PINE SISKINS. Eight NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWLS were detected at the hook on the night of Nov 2 and an AMERICAN BITTERN was found at north pond that day. Raccoon Ridge highlights this week included a late BROAD-WINGED HAWK, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, GOLDEN EAGLE, and 2 SNOW BUNTINGS Nov 3; 4 NORTHERN GOSHAWKS, 2 GOLDEN EAGLES, 4 SNOW BUNTINGS, and 30 PINE SISKINS Nov 1; NORTHERN GOSHAWK, a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and 292 RED-TAILED HAWKS Oct 31, and 2 GOLDEN EAGLES Oct 29. Scott's Mountain Hawk Watch had NORTHERN GOSHAWK and GOLDEN EAGLE Nov 1. COMMON GOLDENEYE and 3 SNOW BUNTINGS were found at Merrill Creek Reservoir Nov 3. Also in Warren County NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL and LONG-EARED OWL were detected in Worthington State Forest Nov 2.

Two drake REDHEADS continue at Mount Hope Lake through Oct 30.

Two BARN OWLS were seen hunting pre-dawn along Disposal Rd in the NJ Meadowlands Nov 1. Also in Bergen County was an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Halifax Rd in Mahwah Nov 1.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was noted at Liberty State Park Nov 1.

A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK passed the Montclair Hawk Lookout Nov 1. Single GOLDEN EAGLES were tallied Nov 1 & 2.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found at Glenhurst Meadows in Warren Nov 2.

Two VESPER SPARROWS were noted at Cold Brook Preserve in Tewksbury Nov 1.

At Griggstown along the D &R Canal, a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and 60+ AMERICAN PIPITS were noted Oct 30.

Big Brook Park in Marlboro hosted 2 PALM WARBLERS, a late MAGNOLIA WARBLER, AMERICAN TREE SPARROW, and 15 FOX SPARROWS Nov 2.

North Shore reports this week were of 1-2 COMMON EIDERS off Roosevelt Ave in Deal and a SHORT-EARED OWL was observed at Shark River Inlet Oct 29.

A CACKLING GOOSE was noted in Hamilton Veterans Park Nov 1.

Palmyra Cove Nature Park had a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER Oct 31.
