This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Wednesday, Nov. 6, 1991 at 12:15 pm with reports of SNOWY OWLS, NORTHERN SHRIKE, HUDSONIAN & MARBLED GODWITS, ROSS'S GOOSE, WHITE PELICAN, EURASIAN WIGEON, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, RAZORBILL, GLAUCOUS GULL, GOLDEN EAGLE, and seasonal and local reports.
SNOWY OWLS this week were at Longport Oct. 31; at Sandy Hook Nov. 5, 4:10 PM; and a large white owl, either SNOWY OWL or BARN OWL, was reported on a church roof in Kearney, at 65 Oakwood Ave., where it was videotaped being mobbed by crows.
An imm. NORTHERN SHRIKE was at Yard's Creek Reservoir, below Raccoon Ridge hawkwatch, Saturday Nov. 2. A HUDSONIAN GODWIT appeared in the wetland hotspot behind the Allstate Insurance building on Rt. 10 near Sandoz, at the intersection with Ridgedale Ave., in the Hanover/Florham Park area, on Oct. 31.
At Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge a WHITE PELICAN was reported during the week, but not on the weekend; a MARBLED GODWIT was there Nov. 1; ROSS'S GOOSE was seen there Nov. 2 on the north dike; the same day a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS, and STILT SANDPIPER , WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER , WESTERN SANDPIPER , and PECTORAL SANDPIPER were seen along with LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER and EURASIAN WIGEON. A GLAUCOUS GULL was seen Nov. 1 at Bay Head on the north shore. RAZORBILL was reported flying past Avalon at the end of October; can it be that the "mother of all winters" is returning?
An ad. GOLDEN EAGLE was over Chimney Rock hawkwatch Nov. 3 at 10:45 AM. An imm. RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at the Somerset County Environmental Center on Lord Stirling Rd. in Basking Ridge, in the area known as the woodpecker swamp, as of Nov. 2. TUNDRA SWANS reached Brigantine NWR late in the afternoon of Nov. 2. SNOW BUNTINGS were reported from several lookouts in the Kittatinnies.
