This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday November 9, 2011 with reports of HARRIS'S SPARROW, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, AMERICAN AVOCET, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, PARASITIC JAEGER, seasonal and local reports of interest.
The Sandy Hook HARRIS'S SPARROW was last seen Nov 4. Other birds noted this week at Sandy Hook included a subadult male COMMON EIDER off the false hook Nov 7, AMERICAN BITTERN at Plum Island Nov 5, a very late GREAT CRESTED FLYCATCHER Nov 7, AMERICAN PIPIT, and SNOW BUNTING. Five PARASITIC JAEGERS were tallied off Island Beach State Park Nov 6.
Reports from Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR this week included 2 AMERICAN BITTERNS, 2 HUDSONIAN GODWITS, and 5 SNOW BUNTINGS Nov 4-5.
Wallkill River NWR's Liberty Loop impoundments hosted 12 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, 2 WESTERN SANDPIPERS, 4-5 WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPERS, 4 PECTORAL SANDPIPERS, and a late SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER Nov 8.
Sightings at Raccoon Ridge this week included 3 GOLDEN EAGLES Nov 4, a NORTHERN GOSHAWK Nov 5, and a flock of 22 COMMON RAVENS and PINE SISKIN Nov 6.
Sunrise Mountain saw a juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK fly past the hawk watch Nov 5. On nearby Culver's Lake a WHITE-WINGED SCOTER was present the same day.
A belated report of a LE CONTE'S SPARROW surfaced this week. The bird was photographed at the Great Swamp NWR Nov 1; it has not been relocated despite searching. Other birds at the Great Swamp this week included 2-3 SNOW BUNTINGS at the bluebird parking lot off Pleasant Plains Rd Nov 6-7.
Assiscong Marsh near Flemington had 30+ RUSTY BLACKBIRDS Nov 4.
One HUDSONIAN GODWIT continued at the mudflats adjacent to Lefante Way/Bayonne Golf Club through Nov 7. A drake EURASIAN WIGEON appeared at Liberty State Park in the bay between the interpretive center and park headquarters Nov 7.
An AMERICAN AVOCET was found Nov 6 at Harrier Meadow (restricted access) in the NJ Meadowlands. Also there this week were WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and 8 SNOW BUNTINGS.
Hatfield Swamp had an AMERICAN BITTERN Nov 4.
A BRANT was found Nov 6-7 at Loantaka Brook Reservation in Morris County.
Finderne Wetlands in Bridgewater Twp had a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW Nov 5.
