Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/11/1991
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday, Dec. 11, 1991 at 1:30 pm, with reports of LECONTE'S SPARROW, SNOWY OWL, HARLEQUIN, COMMON EIDER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, WESTERN KINGBIRD, EURASIAN WIGEON, REDHEAD, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, local reports, and an announcement concerning the Boonton Christmas Count following the reports. The LECONTE'S SPARROW at Overpeck Park in the town of Ridgefield Park was seen on Dec. 8 and 9, north of the bulldozer. From Rt. 46 eastbound, exit at I-95 South/Teaneck Rd., and follow the signs for Challenger Rd. and the Theaters. Follow Challenger Rd. through a number of turns until it goes left and ends in the park. Park in the second parking lot and walk north on the fill toward the bulldozer. Also seen there this week: RUSTY BLACKBIRD, SNIPE, PIPIT, MEADOWLARK, NASHVILLE WARBLER. The Snowy Owl continues this week at Caven Pier in Liberty State Park, Jersey City, daily, either on the Pier or on the barges to the left of the Pier. Also at Liberty State Park this week: COOPER'S HAWK, MERLIN, & EURASIAN WIGEON, the latter on the north side of the Park near the flagpoles on Dec. 8; and ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER the same day near the Environmental Center with a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET. HARLEQUINS & COMMON EIDERS continue at Barnegat Inlet and the 8th Street Jetty. NORTHERN SHRIKES this week were as follows: Allendale Celery Farm Dec. 9; another in Sussex County at the north end of Paulins Kill Lake on Dec. 4; and a third at Sandy Hook on Dec. 8 at North Pond. Also at Sandy Hook on Dec. 8 was a WESTERN KINGBIRD at Parking Area E on a wire. Another WESTERN KINGBIRD was at the Willow Brook Arboretum in Morris County on Dec. 8 on the snow fence, not reported since. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was under the Betsey Ross Bridge on Dec. 4. EURASIAN WIGEONS this week were as follows: 3 at Brigantine NWR Dec. 7, one at Marconi Road on Shark River Inlet, Belmar; one at Lake Takanassee, and one on Franklin Lake, both in West Long Branch. REDHEADS were at Old Sam's Pond in Point Pleasant, and Franklin Lake, both on Dec. 7. Lots of WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS are at Thompson Park in Lincroft.
