Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/12/2013
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday December 12, 2013 with reports of EARED GREBE, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, SNOWY OWL, seasonal/local reports of interest, and announcements.

The EARED GREBE continues this week through Dec 9 at Round Valley Reservoir. From the camping/scuba parking lot take the blue trail about a half mile until you see a small cove- look for the bird here.

A RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD is visiting a feeder at 9 Haines Ave in Medford, Burlington County through Dec 8. Visitors are welcome but must call first. Contact Roger at 215-668-2447 to arrange a visit.

Sixteen SANDHILL CRANES were found in a farm field along Rte 45 near Mannington High School in Salem County Dec 12.

Also in Burlington County this week was a SNOWY OWL at Delanco Dec 6.

Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR sightings this week included 54 TUNDRA SWANS, EURASIAN WIGEON, 2 REDHEADS, and an AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN Dec 7-8. Three SNOWY OWLS were tallied there Dec 7.

Barnegat Light State Park hosted 3-5 KING EIDERS, 50 COMMON EIDERS, all three scoters, and 12 HARLEQUIN DUCKS Dec 7.

Sandy Hook sightings this week included 5 RED-NECKED GREBES Dec 8, 2 SNOWY OWLS, and a first-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL at B-lot Dec 7-10.

A SNOWY OWL was photographed in Keansburg Dec 8.

North Shore reports this week were of 6 KING EIDERS at Manasquan Inlet Dec 6-9 and a SNOWY OWL in Avon Dec 9.

Two REDHEADS were found at Manasquan Reservoir Dec 11 and a RED-NECKED GREBE was noted there earlier this week.

Three RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were noted at Colonial Park in Franklin Twp Dec 7. Also in Franklin Twp (Somerset County) were 3-6 SANDHILL CRANES in the fields around Weston Canal and Randolph Roads Dec 8.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and CLAY-COLORED SPARROW were found at the DeKorte Environment Center in the NJ Meadowlands Dec 8.

A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was found at Bayonne Ocean Terminal Dec 9.

Five RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were noted at the Ridgewood Duck Pond Dec 11.

Sussex County reports this week included a SNOWY OWL at High Point State Park near the monument Dec 7 and 10 SHORT-EARED OWLS and 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS at Wallkill River NWR's Liberty Loop Dec 8.

Three GOLDEN EAGLES were noted at Raccoon Ridge Dec 7.
