This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday December 14, 2006 with reports of EARED GREBE, GREATER WHITE-
FRONTED GOOSE, AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN, NORTHERN SHRIKE, seasonal and local
reports of interest and announcements.
The two EARED GREBES continue through Dec 14 at Lakes Bay near Atlantic
City. From the intersection of Rtes 9 & 40/322 go east on
40/322 about a mile to Cordova Ave and turn right. Drive a short distance
on Cordova to the bay: look for the birds here or opposite adjacent blocks
(DeLorme P. 71, G-16).
A WESTERN TANAGER was discovered at Higbee Beach WMA in Cape May this
week: call the CMBO Birding Hotline for details.
A truant OSPREY was noted at Brigantine NWR Dec 14.
Barnegat Inlet hosted 30+ HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 60 COMMON EIDERS, and 30 HORNED
LARKS Dec 9.
North Shore reports this week were of an adult BLACK-HEADED GULL at
Manasquan Inlet Dec 9, a first-year GLAUCOUS GULL at Little Silver Lake in
Point Pleasant Beach Dec 10, an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on Wreck Pond
Dec 10 and a RED-NECKED GREBE at the Belmar Marina Dec 9. A male HARLEQUIN
DUCK was detected off Clem Conover Blvd in Deal Dec 13.
Sandy Hook sightings this week were of a flock of all 3 Scoter species off
C-lot, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at north pond, and 30 SNOW BUNTINGS near
north beach. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at

A first-year ICELAND GULL was noted at the boat ramp at the end of Park St
in Bordentown Dec 9.
Twelve RUSTY BLACKBIRDS were found at the Pole Farm in Mercer County Dec 12.
An AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN was found at Round Valley Reservoir Dec 14. Other
Hunterdon County sightings this week included 2 CACKLING GEESE at Assiscong
Marsh Dec 12 and RED-THROATED LOON, 3 LESSER BLACK- BACKED GULLS, and a
LAPLAND LONGSPUR at Spruce Run Reservoir. The longspur was found at the
boat ramp with 30+ HORNED LARKS Dec 13.
The NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen again in the Great Swamp NWR Dec 10.
The bird was found to the left of the heron rookery parking lot at the end
of Pleasant Plains Rd and observed between 4:10 and 4:30 pm.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found along the Ramapo River in Mahwah Dec
11-12. Look for the bird from the end of Halifax Ave off Rte 202. in the
fields opposite Ramapo College or the large pool in the river near Henry
Five RUSTY BLACKBIRDS and a PILEATED WOODPECKER were noted a Lenape Park in
Cranford Dec 12.
A pelagic Christmas Bird Count is scheduled from Belmar Jan 5 in search of
