Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/16/1998
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Wed. Dec. 16 with reports of CAVE SWALLOW, RAVEN, NORTHERN SHRIKE, COMMON REDPOLL, PINE SISKIN, EURASIAN WIGEON, SHORT-EARED OWL, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, EVENING GROSBEAK, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, BLACK-HEADED GULL and local reports of interest.

Two CAVE SWALLOWS were over South Cape May Meadows Dec. 11. A EURASIAN WIGEON was at the Coast Guard Ponds on Ocean Drive in Wildwood Dec. 12. A BLACK-HEADED GULL was off Cape May Point Dec. 11. No sign of BLACK-TAILED GULL over the weekend. Gull numbers are way down.

A RAVEN was feeding on a red squirrel carvass on Clinton Rd, West Milford Sec 13; also on Clinton Rd Dec. 13 were 150 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS from Parking Areas P3 to P4; 30 SISKINS and 5 COMMON REDPOLLS just off Clinton Rd near Area P5; and an EVENING GROSBEAK was off nearby Rte 515 at a feeder, also Dec. 13.

The imm. NORTHERN SHRIKE is still at Stony Brook Millstone off the Red Shale Trail as of Dec. 16. On Oberle Road, Alpha Dec. 14, one LAPLAND LONGSPUR was with a flock of 100+ HORNED LARKS Dec. 14. BALD EAGLES were reported this week in Somerville and Rahway.

Manahawkin had a SHORT-EARED OWL Dec. 12. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS were reported this week from Cape May; from a pond at exit 11 off the NJ Turnpike; and from Lake Como.
