Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/17/1997
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Dec 17 with reports of MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, ROSS'S GOOSE, PINE GROSBEAK, EVENING GROSBEAK, RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, COMMON REDPOLL, HARLEQUIN DUCK, KING EIDER, COMMON EIDER, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, ICELAND GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, and RAVEN, as well as local reports of interest.

THE MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER was still present at the entrance to the Beanery in Cape May this week. The WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE remains on the Colonial Park pond in Somerset this week; the other one, at North Princeton Developmental Center on the Great Road in Skillman was not reported but may be present still.

Clinton Road off Rte. 23 in the Pequannock Watershed continued to host RED CROSSBILL and WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, with a high of 200+ WHITE-WINGS on Dec 13. On Dec 16, much of the action was north of the yellow 3.0 sign. PINE GROSBEAKS were heard on Dec 13, and a flock of COMMON REDPOLLS was seen also on Dec 13. A flock of 100 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS was at Ringwood Dec 13.

On Rte. 515 this week, a flock of EVENING GROSBEAKS (14) has been at feeders 3.5 miles north of Rte. 23. Also on 515 this week, a RAVEN and a flock of RED CROSSBILLS. Also, RED CROSSBILLS (12) were at Round Valley Dec 15 in the extensive pines, along with RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, CREEPERS and SAPSUCKER. COMMON REDPOLLS were also reported in the Thunder Mountain - Flatbrook WMA area off Rte 615, Peter's Valley.

An estimated 100,000 SNOW GEESE were in the Mannington Marsh area Dec 14, among them 4 ROSS'S GEESE. The gull flock at Florence on the Delaware on Dec 13 included 10 ICELAND GULLS, 3 GLAUCOUS GULLS, and 15 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. COMMON EIDER, KING EIDER and HARLEQUIN were still at Barnegat Inlet this week and KING EIDER continued at Cape May Point near the bunker. Sandy Hook Dec 14, at Area F, had ICELAND GULL, SNOW BUNTING, SURF SCOTER, BLACK SCOTER and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER.

At Alpha this week, there were several hundred HORNED LARKS and, on Dec 13, 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS in with the HORNED LARKS. Liberty State Park in Jersey City Dec 14 had 4 WHITE-WINGED SCOTER among the usual MERGANSERS, BUFFLEHEAD, WIGEON, RUDDIES and HORNED GREBE.
