This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for
Thursday December 18, 2008 with reports of BARNACLE GOOSE, BLACK
GUILLEMOT, ROSS'S GOOSE, LARK SPARROW, seasonal and local reports of
interest, and announcements. Most locations in this report can be
found in Bill Boyle's "A Bird Finding Guide to New Jersey" available
at New Jersey Audubon Society Bookstores.
A BLACK GUILLEMOT was found at Sandy Hook Dec 14 off B-lot. Other
birds noted at the hook this week included a juvenile RED-SHOULDERED
HAWK, WINTER WREN, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at north pond, 2 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS among the SNOW BUNTING flock at Gunnison Beach Dec 13, and
3 PINE SISKINS. A free, detailed birding map is available at SHBO;
check the sightings log there for daily reports.
A BLACK GUILLEMOT was observed at Shark River Inlet Dec 15. Other
North Shore reports were of the continuing EURASIAN WIGEON at Silver
Lake in Belmar, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Allenhurst, and a
GLAUCOUS GULL at Manasquan Inlet.
The BARNACLE GOOSE continues this week with a sighting Dec 17 in
Califon, Hunterdon County. Look for the bird at the "pond" section
of the South Branch of the Raritan River opposite the Methodist
Church in downtown Califon. Best times are early and late in the
day; the bird has also been seen with CANADA GOOSE flocks feeding in
fields along Rte. 513 at other times.
Island Beach State Park had COMMON EIDER, PARASITIC JAEGER, a
NASHVILLE WARBLER near the nature center feeders, PALM WARBLER, and
FOX SPARROW Dec 13.
The Manahawkin/Cedar Run Dock Rd/Dock Rd area hosted 4 ROUGH-LEGGED
HAWKS, 5 BALD EAGLES, and 24 EASTERN MEADOWLARKs Dec 13.
Two REDHEADS were found in the Delaware River off National Park Dec 15.
An ICELAND GULL was noted at Skelly Field off College Farm Rd in New
Brunswick Dec 15.
A LAPLAND LONGSPUR was detected at the Spruce Run Reservoir boat
launch Dec 13. Also noted there were several flocks of SNOW GEESE
totaling 3,790 birds.
Two SHORT-EARED OWLS were noted in the late afternoon along Oberly Rd
at the Alpha Grasslands Dec 13. Three SHORT-EARED OWLS were found
there Dec 17 along with 9 NORTHERN HARRIERS, AMERICAN KESTREL, 100+
HORNED LARKS and SNOW BUNTINGS, and 3 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS.
A BARN OWL and 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS were found along Valley Brook Ave
and over the former Kingsland landfill at the NJ Meadowlands Dec 17.
CHRISTMAS BIRD COUNT HIGHLIGHTS (all held Dec 14):
The Jersey section of the Lower Hudson CBC had 100 species with many
highlights including 81 CANVASBACKS, WILD TURKEY, 11 GREAT
CORMORANTS, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 2 VIRGINIA RAILS, 2 'count week'
COMMON MOORHENS, 4 BARN OWLS, LONG-EARED OWL, SHORT-EARED OWL, 3
AMERICAN PIPITS, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, and PALM WARBLER.
Sussex CBC tallied about 90 species including a LARK SPARROW at
Station Park in Sparta. To look for the bird take Main Street north
and turn left on Station Rd. Enter Station Park on the left; look
for the bird in the mixed sparrow/junco flock on the left side of the
maintenance building (DeLorme P. 24, E-9). Also on the count was a
NORTHERN SHRIKE in a brushy field on the east side of Gorney Rd north
of Ross' Corner in Lafayette (DeLorme P. 19, M-20) and a GREATER
WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE on Clove Acres Lake in Sussex, best viewed from
Elizabeth Drive on the west side of the lake (DeLorme P. 19, I-24).
Princeton CBC had around 90 species including a ROSS'S GOOSE at
Aqueduct Pond in Princeton, RED-THROATED LOON at Colonial Lake in
Lawrenceville, 3 CACKLING GEESE, a BLACK-AND-WHITE WARBLER along the
D&R Canal, and 2 PINE WARBLERS.
Northwest Hunterdon CBC tallied 94 species including a count first 2
COMMON RAVENS, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER at Round Valley, and SNOW BUNTINGS
at Spruce Run Reservoir.
A Pelagic CBC from Belmar is scheduled for January 2, 2009 in search
of Razorbill, other alcids, Black-legged Kittiwake and other gulls.
