Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/19/2000
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Tue Dec 19 with reports of Review List ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, PAINTED BUNTING, LECONTE'S SPARROW, COMMON MURRE; and seasonal and unseasonal reports along with some Christmas Count highlights (other highlights next time--not all counts reported).

The previously reported ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD and ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER in Cape May survived to be included in the 151 species on the Cape May Count Dec 17, also including LARK SPARROW, BLUE-HEADED VIREO and INDIGO BUNTING. The Oceanville Brig) Count Dec 16 (no total yet) produced a PAINTED BUNTING (unfortunately in an area closed to the public) and 3 ALCIDS on the oceanfront at the Margate-Ventnor border, one of which was a COMMON MURRE!

The Salem NJ portion of the Middletown Delaware Count on Dec 17 turned up PURPLE SANDPIPER and LAUGHING GULL. The Sandy Hook Count Dec 16 had 108, including fly-by DOVEKIE and LITTLE GULL off Gunnison Beach and LAUGHING GULL, ICELAND GULL, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and BLACK VULTURE (new). Princeton Dec 17 (no total yet) had a GR. WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE. Lakehurst Dec 16 had 103, with LARK SPARROW, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER and OSPREY (new).

Great Swamp-Watchung Ridge Count Dec 16 had 79, with a LE CONTE'S SPARROW in the Management Area( unfortunately closed to the public) and 25 AM. PIPIT. Sussex Dec 17, despite sleet and snow, had 86, including NASHVILLE and CAPE MAY WARBLERS in the same spot in Hardyston, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL on Culver Lake and ICELAND GULL in Sussex Borough.

Other reports this week not related to counts included 14 HARLEQUINS at Barnegat Inlet; three BALD EAGLES on Merrill Creek Reservoir; a nice count of 300 COMMON MERGANSERS at Mercer County Park; and scads of LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at Florence.

Next report after Jan 1 will have results from the other counts.
