This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Wed Dec 2 with reports of these
Review List species: BARNACLE GOOSE, and ROSS'S GOOSE. Also reported
this week: NORTHERN SHRIKES, HARLEQUINS, KING EIDER, EURASIAN WIGEON,
EVENING GROSBEAK, RAVEN, and birds of seasonal and local interest.
A BARNACLE GOOSE, origin unknown, was photographed on the Pond in
Colonial Park off JFK Blvd in the town of Somerset on Nov 27. No
report since, but it bears checking; White-fronted Goose has
occurred here several times. A ROSS'S GOOSE was among SNOW GEESE at
Mannington Marsh Nov 27.
NORTHERN SHRIKES continue at the Stony Brook Millstone Watershed in
Mercer County, and another was reported at the "Pole Farm," Mercer
County Park West, in Lawrenceville on Nov 27.
Birds at Barnegat Inlet Nov 28 included 6 HARLEQUIN, a female KING
EIDER, SNOW BUNTING, IPSWICH SPARROWS, OYSTERCATCHERS, TURNSTONES,
PURPLE SANDPIPER, RED-THROATED LOONS, GANNET, OLDSQUAW and SURF SCOTER.
Some four or five SEDGE WRENS were calling at dawn at Manahawkin
WMA near the Bridge to Nowhere Nov 28. A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was also
at Manahawkin Nov 28. A Gray Seal was seen out of the water at 13th
St, Barnegat Light on Nov 29.
A EURASIAN WIGEON was at Stockton Lake in Manasquan Nov 27. A
strong flight of hundreds of RED-THROATED LOONS was observed at
Artificial Island, Salem County Nov 29. Previous high for the
Twenty EVENING GROSBEAK and one dark ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK flew over
Chimney Rock Nov 30. Record totals for Chimney Rock fall hawk
migration in 1998 included: 18 BALD EAGLES, 4500 SHARPSHINS, 16
GOLDEN EAGLES, 2,000 KESTRELS, and 334 MERLINS.
A RAVEN was sighted over Rte 287 at Rte 23 on Nov 26. The usual
waterfowl are at Liberty State Park in Jersey City, including
several hundred RUDDY DUCKS, and some CANVASBACK and HORNED GREBES.
A large flock of SNOW GEESE, including one blue, was reported
inland at Allentown NJ Nov 30.
An AMERICAN BITTERN and two TRICOLORED HERONS linger at Sedge
Islands off Island Beach as of Nov 29.
