This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday December 2, 2010 with reports of RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL, LITTLE GULL, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, RAZORBILL, CAVE SWALLOW, seasonal and local reports of interest and announcements.

The RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD in Interlaken was last reported Nov 28.

Sandy Hook birds this week included a good seabird flight Nov 26 with 5 female KING EIDERS, 2,000 BONAPARTE'S GULLS, an adult LITTLE GULL, 4 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, and 46 RAZORBILLS. At least 3 KING EIDERS remained through Nov 29 along with 13 COMMON EIDERS. Smaller numbers of RAZORBILLS (10 or less) continued off B-lot, C-lot, and the end of the fisherman's road through Nov 29. Single RED-NECKED GREBES were observed off B-lot Nov 25 and the Visitor's Center Nov 28. Another LITTLE GULL, a late ROYAL TERN and 2 CAVE SWALLOWS were found Nov 27. Two late BARN SWALLOWS continued around the north end through Nov 29 and single ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS were noted that day at north pond and at the salt pond. A CACKLING GOOSE was noted a Nov 25 and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was detected in the K-lot that day. A late COMMON TERN was observed at C-lot Dec 2. Up to 60 SNOW BUNTINGS have been around the hook's beaches this week. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily reports.

North Shore reports this week included the "Common" EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL at the third pond in the Lake Takanassee complex (near the Fireman's Memorial) through Nov 28, 4 REDHEADS at Lake Como Nov 27, up to 20+ COMMON EIDERS off various streets in Deal, a COMMON MOORHEN at Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch Nov 27 and 2 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES there Nov 26, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Sylvan Lake Nov 27, an adult LITTLE GULL off the Sea Bright Municipal Beach Nov 27, and 1-2 RAZORBILLS off Roosevelt & Phillips Aves Nov 27 & 30. Birds noted at Barnegat Light State Park/Inlet Nov 27 were KING EIDER, 30 COMMON EIDERS, HARLEQUIN DUCKS, BLACK-HEADED GULL, 2 GLAUCOUS GULLS, and a CAVE SWALLOW. Also in Ocean County were 2 CAVE SWALLOWS at Cedar Run Dock Rd Nov 26 & 28.

Brigantine NWR sightings Nov 27-28 included 148 TUNDRA SWANS, 9 REDHEADS and 12 CANVASBACKS at Turtle Cove, 3 AMERICAN BITTERNS, GOLDEN EAGLE, an AMERICAN AVOCET and a SHORT-EARED OWL in the east pool, and 2 CAVE SWALLOWS in the southwest pool. At nearby Mott's Creek Rd 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS were hunting on the evening of Nov 28.

Thirty-four MARBLED GODWITS were noted at the south end of Brigantine Island Nov 28.

Lake Etra in Twin Rivers had a CACKLING GOOSE Nov 25.

Two CAVE SWALLOWS were found at South Amboy Nov 26.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was detected in a Canada Goose flock on the "third" or back pond at Bee Meadow Park in Whippany Nov 25.

Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were found along the Passaic River at Glenhurst Meadows Nov 25.

Scott's Mountain Hawk Watch recorded a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and 3 GOLDEN EAGLES Nov 27.

Raccoon Ridge tallied 8 GOLDEN EAGLES Nov 27; a NORTHERN GOSHAWK and 2 GOLDEN EAGLES were there Nov 28.

High Point State Park had a RUFFED GROUSE and BARRED OWL at Kuser Bog and 6 SNOW BUNTINGS near the monument Nov 27.


A near-shore Pelagic Trip is scheduled for Saturday January 22, 2011 from Belmar NJ. This 8-hour trip will search for alcids including Razorbill, murres, Atlantic Puffin, plus Black-legged Kittiwake and other "good" gulls. Cost is $115.
