Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/24/2008
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Tuesday Dec 23 with reports of ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, SNOWY OWL, SHORT- EARED OWL, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, seasonal and local reports of interest, CBC highlights, and announcements. Sightings from the NJ Meadowlands Dec 23 included 2 GREAT CORMORANTS, 6 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS (4 light morph, 2 dark morph), 3 BALD EAGLES, 3 AMERICAN KESTRELS, SNOWY OWL, and 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS.

Seventy SNOW BUNTINGS and 3 AMERICAN KESTRELS were noted at Ocean Terminal in Bayonne Dec 23.

Great Swamp NWR hosted 1-2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS along Pleasant Plains Rd Dec 21-22, seen both near the gazebo by the heronry overlook and in the fields near the refuge headquarters.

Alpha Grasslands/Oberly Rd had SHORT-EARED OWL, 250 HORNED LARKS, 6 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and 24 SNOW BUNTINGS Dec 20. Three ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were hunting the fields there Dec 22.

Additional ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS this week were individuals found at the eastern edge of Mercer County Park Dec 20 and along New Center Rd near Duke Farms in Hillsborough Twp Dec 22.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was detected among thousands of CANADA GEESE at Cross Farm Park/Willow Brook Rd in Holmdel Dec 22 (DeLorme P. 44, E-9).

North Shore reports this week included a COMMON EIDER at Manasquan Inlet and the drake EURASIAN WIGEON at Silver Lake in Belmar, both Dec 20. A third-year ICELAND GULL and a first-year were off Pullman Ave in Elberon Dec 21 and a first-year ICELAND GULL and 2 AMERICAN PIPITS were on the fields at Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch the same day. An immature male KING EIDER continues through Dec 21 at Barnegat Light State Park. Also there were 15 HARLEQUIN DUCKS and 119 PURPLE SANDPIPERS.

CBC Highlights:

Sandy Hook CBC Dec 20 totaled 106 species including the count's first COMMON MOORHEN, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER near north pond, and 2 flyover RED CROSSBILLS. A GLAUCOUS GULL was detected at Keansburg Beach.

Walnut Valley CBC Dec 20 tallied 89 species including REDHEAD, RUFFED GROUSE along Old Mine Rd, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK at Allamuchy, COMMON RAVEN, EASTERN PHOEBE, a count-first WHITE-EYED VIREO, BLUE-HEADED VIREO, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD.
