Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/26/2002
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Thursday December 26, 2002 with reports of RAZORBILL, COMMON EIDER, HARLEQUIN DUCK, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED and BARNACLE GOOSE, NORTHERN GOSHAWK, seasonal and local reports of interest.

Two RAZORBILLS were present at Manasquan Inlet Dec 22 along with a late Forsters Tern.

Three RAZORBILLS were at Sandy Hook Dec 22 off B-lot along with a possible SOOTY SHEARWATER. A female COMMON EIDER was in Horseshoe Cove along with the female BARROWS GOLDENEYE Dec 21-22. Park in the median lot opposite the south maintenance area, walk north and take the service road on the left that ends at the bay. A female HARLEQUIN DUCK joined the large SCOTER flock (SURF SCOTER, BLACK SCOTER and WHITE-WINGED SCOTER) off Fishermans Beach Dec 19. A belated report of a LAPLAND LONGSPUR with 40 SNOW BUNTINGS was received Dec 17 from North Beach.

Twelve HARLEQUIN DUCKS were reported at Barnegat Light along with an immature male COMMON EIDER Dec 24. An adult male COMMON EIDER continued at Absecon Inlet (Atlantic City side) Dec 21.

Four SHORT-EARED OWLS were found at Cedar Run Dock Road Dec 21. Two SHORT-EARED OWLS were found along with a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK along the Liberty Loop Trail at Wallkill River NWR the same day.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was found at Hamilton Square Dec 23. Access is from Hughes Drive, one-quarter mile from CR 535. Park in the lot just past the USDA Soil Conservation Office, climb the earth dam and scope the pond (DeLorme P 42, K-7).

Another GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and a BARNACLE GOOSE were reported from Monroe Township, Middlesex Co. Dec 24-25. The birds were with a large CANADA GOOSE flock adjacent to the intersection of Forsgate (CR 612) and Perrineville Roads (CR 625). This is adjacent to Thompson County Park (DeLorme P. 43, E-20).

A NORTHERN GOSHAWK was soaring over Manasquan Reservoir Dec 24.

Swartswood Lake hosted a SURF SCOTER Dec 22 and a RED-BREASTED MERGANSER Dec 23. Culvers Lake had a first-year ICELAND GULL and two LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS Dec 20.

The Walnut Valley CBC held Dec 14 found 77 species including the previously reported Varied Thrush (not reported since last week), seven BALD EAGLES, two MERLINS, five RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS (on PA side of circle), and two RAVENS.
