This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday December 30, 2010 with reports of PACIFIC LOON, EARED GREBE, BLACK GUILLEMOT, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.
A BLACK GUILLEMOT was discovered at Manasquan Inlet Dec 24 and continues through Dec 29. The bird has been viewed mostly in the upstream or western part of the inlet from parking lots overlooking the inlet on both the Manasquan Twp and Point Pleasant Beach sides. A PACIFIC LOON has been seen sporadically from the south jetty through Dec 29. The EARED GREBE continues on the western portion of the inlet, most often viewed from the Point Pleasant Beach parking lot through Dec 26. Other birds noted this week at Manasquan Inlet included an immature male KING EIDER Dec 28, RED-NECKED GREBE, and a RAZORBILL Dec 26. A first-cycle BLACK-HEADED GULL was roosting with RING-BILLED GULLS at the baseball field at the corner of Perrine and East Virginia Avenues in Manasquan Dec 26.
An EARED GREBE appeared at Shark River Inlet Dec 29. Other North Shore reports this week were of the continuing Eurasian GREEN-WINGED TEAL at Lake Takanasee Dec 23, hen KING EIDERS off Monmouth Beach Bathing Pavilion Dec 24 and at Shark River Inlet Dec 28, and a large alcid sp. off the Allenhurst jetties Dec 24. The 11th Avenue jetty in Longport, Atlantic County Dec 24 hosted a large raft of sea ducks including 36 COMMON EIDERS, KING EIDER, and large numbers of BLACK SCOTER, WHITE-WINGED SCOTER and SURF SCOTER.
A drake REDHEAD was noted at Lake Etra in Twin Rivers Dec 26.
Spruce Run Reservoir birds this week included a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and ICELAND GULL Dec 25, 2 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and 40 SNOW BUNTINGS Dec 27, a CACKLING GOOSE and a GLAUCOUS GULL Dec 29.
Alpha (Oberly Rd) in Warren County hosted a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 150 HORNED LARKS, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and 2 SNOW BUNTINGS Dec 28.
Sussex County reports included a drake REDHEAD at Hendershot's Point on Swartswood Lake Dec 28 and a small flock of WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS in the conifers around the 4-H camp along Struble Rd in Stokes State Forest Dec 22.
Two light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS were viewed at Mill Creek Point in Secaucus Dec 28.
A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continued this week at the Ridgewood Duck Pond through Dec 24.
Single COMMON REDPOLLS appeared at feeders in Sparta and South Brunswick this week.
A near-shore Pelagic Trip is scheduled for Saturday January 22, 2011 from Belmar NJ. This 8-hour trip will search for alcids including Razorbill, murres, Atlantic Puffin, plus Black-legged Kittiwake and other "good" gulls. Cost is $115.
