This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday December 31, 2003
with reports of EURASIAN WIGEON, KING EIDER, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE,
BLACK-HEADED GULL, RAZORBILL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, COMMON REDPOLL, seasonal
and local reports of interest.
Eight COMMON REDPOLLS were noted at Sandy Hook Dec 28-29 at the end of
the Fisherman's Trail and North Beach. A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was
found at Sandy Hook's Horseshoe Cove Dec 20-21. Among the 108 species
on the Sandy Hook CBC were GLAUCOUS GULL, SHORT-EARED OWL, and LAPLAND
LONGSPUR at the end of the Fisherman's Trail, FORSTER'S TERN, 2 BALD
EAGLES, and a WILSON'S WARBLER at Hartshorne Woods. A LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL and 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were found at North Beach Dec
21. Check the Bird Sightings Book at SHBO for daily reports.
Two BLACK BRANT were viewed at Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch Dec
24. Reach the park from Ocean Ave opposite the intersection with Joline
A drake EURASIAN WIGEON continues in Shark River Estuary Dec 24, best
viewed from the north end of Riverside Drive. A BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE
was seen at Shark River Inlet Dec 30. A RAZORBILL was found in
Manasquan Inlet Dec 28 & 30.
The Lakehurst CBC Dec 20 had 109 species including SNOWY EGRET and
RAZORBILL. An amazing 80 REDHEADS were found at Snug Harbor, Toms
River. Snug Harbor is located on Fischer Blvd across from the super
Wawa (DeLorme P. 50 L-10).
Barnegat Light continues to host 20+ HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 1-2 KING EIDERS,
4 COMMON EIDERS, and 4 LAPLAND LONGSPURS. Four RAZORBILLS were fly-bys
there Dec 28. Some 80 COMMON REDPOLLS were there the same day. Another
KING EIDER was found in the ocean at 15th Street in Surf City. Other
highlights of the 137 species on the Barnegat CBC Dec 28 included
RED-NECKED GREBE, LITTLE BLUE and TRICOLORED HERONS, BARN OWL and
LONG-EARED OWL, WHITE-EYED VIREO, 3 SEDGE WRENS, and 160+ COMMON
Up to 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and 5 SHORT-EARED OWLS are being seen from
the bridge to nowhere in Manahawkin WMA this week. These species are
also present at Cedar Run Dock Road.
A first-winter BLACK-HEADED GULL was found at the first bridge on Great
Bay Blvd, Tuckerton Dec 29. Six COMMON REDPOLLS were found near the
last bridge the same day.
The Oceanville CBC Dec 20 tallied 136 species including an EURASIAN
WIGEON at Brigantine NWR, SHORT-EARED OWLS at Mott's Creek, a GREEN
HERON, GLAUCOUS GULL, BLACK-HEADED GULL and RAZORBILL in the Lake's
Bay/Atlantic City area. Brigantine Island hosted 12 species of
shorebirds including 3 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, 41 MARBLED GODWITS, 40
WILLETS, RED KNOT, 3 WESTERN SANDPIPER, and 2 LONG-BILLED DOWITCHERS.
Also there were ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and ICELAND GULL.
A WESTERN KINGBIRD was discovered in Montville on the Boonton CBC Dec
21-23; no reports since.
The NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen again Dec 25 at the 90-degree turn on
Pleasant Plains Road.
The Walnut Valley CBC Dec 21 had at least 89 species including a LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULL on Mountain Lake (DeLorme P. 29, B-15 & 16), 2
LINCOLN'S SPARROWS, GOLDEN EAGLE, and a NORTHERN SHRIKE. The shrike was
seen again Dec 22. To look for the bird from the town of Hope take Rte
519 south about 1.5 miles and turn right on Kostenbader Road. About 100
yards up Kostenbader is a bridge where the shrike was very active on
both sides (DeLorme P. 23, N-16).
Three COMMON REDPOLLS were found at a feeder in Stewartsville Dec 30.
Other places where REDPOLLS were reported this week include Cattus
Island Park, Island Beach State Park, and Dix WMA.
The Raritan Estuary CBC had 94 species Dec 28 including WILD TURKEY,
BLACK VULTURE, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, BROWN THRASHER, and VESPER SPARROW.
Merrill Creek Reservoir is currently closed due to the Orange Alert
