Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/4/2008
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday December 4, 2008 with reports of BARNACLE GOOSE, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, HUDSONIAN GODWIT, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, RED CROSSBILL, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.

The BARNACLE GOOSE has returned to Califon, Hunterdon County, observed Nov 29-Dec 1. The bird is most often found with the CANADA GOOSE flock that spends time early and late in the day on the pond opposite the Methodist Church in "downtown" Califon.

An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was found at Thompson Park in Middletown Nov 29-Dec 2. To look for the bird park at Marlu Lake, walk west across the dam and make a right, following the path until in intersects the paved walkway. Look for the bird around this intersection. Also noted at Thompson Park were 5-6 FOX SPARROWS.

Brigantine NWR reports Nov 29 included a ROSS'S GOOSE along the south dike, REDHEAD, 3 VIRGINIA RAILS, 8 BALD EAGLES, A GOLDEN EAGLE from the gull pond tower, 7 MARBLED GODWITS, A HUDSONIAN GODWIT with an injured foot at the end of the north dike, WHITE-RUMPED SANDPIPER, 10+ RED KNOTS, 7 LAPLAND LONGSPURS at the northeast corner of the dikes, and 3 SNOW BUNTINGS. Both the Hudsonian Godwit and the Marbled Godwits were still present Dec 2 along with an AMERICAN BITTERN.

Barnegat Light State Park had 3 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 13 COMMON EIDERS, and 40+ PURPLE SANDPIPERS Nov 29.

Whitesbog hosted 75 TUNDRA SWANS, 50 PINE SISKINS, and 5 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS Nov 30.

Veteran's Park in Hamilton had an impressive 13 CACKLING GEESE Nov 28; four CACKLING GEESE remained Nov 29.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was noted in the Delaware River at National Park Dec 1.

A second-winter ICELAND GULL was found at Florence Dec 1.

North Shore sightings this week included a male EURASIAN WIGEON at Silver Lake in Belmar Nov 30-31, a PARASITIC JAEGER off Manasquan Inlet Dec 5, and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at Wreck Pond Nov 30.

Two LAPLAND LONGSPURS were detected in the large SNOW BUNTING flock at Sandy Hook Nov 27 and a single longspur was noted Dec 1. The COMMON MOORHEN continues in North Pond through Nov 28. Rahway River Park had 2 CACKLING GEESE and an AMERICAN PIPIT Nov 28.

The NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen again at Great Swamp NWR Dec 3; look for the bird around the heron rookery overlook/parking lot at the end of Pleasant Plains Rd. Also there that day was a juvenile ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK near the "friends" building.

A raptor census at the NJ Meadowlands Nov 28 found BALD EAGLE, 11 NORTHERN HARRIERS, COOPER'S HAWK, 20+ RED-TAILED HAWKS, 6 AMERICAN KESTRELS, PEREGRINE FALCON, 3 SHORT-EARED OWLS, and BARN OWL. Six SHORT-EARED OWLS were tallied there Nov 30 and a BARN OWL flew over Valley Brook Avenue after dusk on Dec 3. Other birds found at the meadowlands this week included 50 BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS, 40 HORNED LARKS, and 30 SNOW BUNTINGS.

A drake REDHEAD was found in the Hudson River at Weehawken Dec 3.

A female RED CROSSBILL has been visiting a feeder at 8 Oradell Drive in Hewitt NJ Nov 29-Dec 1. Visitors are welcome but please be quiet and don't block neighbors' driveways.

Six WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were feeding in evergreens on the grounds of the hostel across from the Denville Public Library Nov 28.

Wallkill River NWR's Liberty Loop Trail hosted a SHORT-EARED OWL Nov 28. An immature GOLDEN EAGLE was seen there Dec 2.

A first-year ICELAND GULL was found at Merrill Creek Reservoir Nov 27.
