This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday December 5, 2012 with reports of PINK-FOOTED GOOSE, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER, RUFOUS/ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD, SANDHILL CRANE, BLACK-HEADED GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL, RED CROSSBILL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, seasonal and local reports of interest and announcements.

A PINK-FOOTED GOOSE was discovered Dec 5 at Cushetunk Lake Park in Whitehouse Station, Hunterdon County. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was present on the lake Dec 3. An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER was found at Medford WMA in Burlington County Dec 2-4. From Medford, take Brace Rd off Ark Rd and check the field on the left a short way down the road; the bird was feeding from low branches along the woods edge.

The RUFOUS/ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD continues at Palmyra Cove Nature Park this week. Look for the bird at the hummingbird feeder placed along the entrance road in the small copse of trees on the right hand side at the start of the butterfly garden.

At Batsto Village several RED CROSSBILLS were seen this week around the visitor center, picnic area, and across the spillway from the worker's house.

Salem County's Mannington Marsh continues to host up to 7 SANDHILL CRANES, generally viewed from the observation deck off Rte 45. At Supawna Meadows a late BLUE-HEADED VIREO and 9 RED CROSSBILLS were noted Dec 1.

Barnegat Light State Park had a late TRICOLORED HERON Nov 30. Birds noted in the inlet Dec 1 included 20 HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 30 COMMON EIDERS, 2 BROWN PELICANS, 100 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, RED KNOT, 2 MARBLED GODWITS, ICELAND GULL, and a late COMMON TERN. A COMMON REDPOLL was there Dec 4.

Thirteen WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS were noted in Turkey Swamp Park off Pettigrew Pond Rd Dec 2.

Seven RED CROSSBILLS were feeding in pines at the end of Whitehall St in Deal Dec 3.

A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and CACKLING GOOSE continue at Warinanco Park in Roselle through Dec 3.

A GLAUCOUS GULL was noted at the Edison Boat Ramp Dec 1.

An adult BLACK-HEADED GULL, presumed to be a returning wintering bird, was back in Bayonne on Dec 1. Look for the bird on the mudflats between Ocean Terminal and the Bayonne Golf Club across from the Houlihan's Restaurant.

A SANDHILL CRANE was photographed over Garret Mountain Dec 4.

An ICELAND GULL was seen this week at Lake Tappan from Poplar Rd.

Spruce Run Reservoir sightings this week included 9 SANDHILL CRANES overhead Dec 1, two RED-THROATED LOONS, ICELAND GULL, GLAUCOUS GULL Dec 3, and at the boat launch 25 SNOW BUNTINGS and 40 HORNED LARKS Nov 30. Also in Hunterdon County was a WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL in the spruces along Sanatorium Rd in Glen Gardner Dec 1.

Six COMMON REDPOLLS were seen from the friends blind at Great Swamp NWR Dec 2.

A juvenile GOLDEN EAGLE was photographed over Bridgewater Twp Dec 3.


In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, many favored birding locations are currently closed to the public or have limited access. A partial list follows.

NJ Meadowlands/DeKorte Environment Center is closed. The Mill Creek Marsh Trail in Secaucus is open.

Great Swamp NWR still has some closed areas, but Pleasant Plains Road is open as are the Orange, Green, Silver, and Beige Trails. For updates see http://www.friendsofgreatswamp.org

Sandy Hook (Gateway National Recreation Area) is closed.
