Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/6/2013
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Friday December 6, 2013 with reports of EURASIAN WIGEON, EARED GREBE, SANDHILL CRANE, LITTLE GULL, BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE, GLAUCOUS GULL, SNOWY OWL, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, seasonal/local reports of interest, and announcements.

The EARED GREBE continues at Round Valley Reservoir through Dec 5. From the camping/scuba parking lot take the blue trail about a half mile until you see a small cove; look for the bird here. At nearby Spruce Run Reservoir an ICELAND GULL was noted Dec 1 and a late BLUE-HEADED VIREO was there Nov 30.

Sandy Hook sightings this week included up to 6 RED-NECKED GREBES, 2 adult LITTLE GULLS and 2 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES Dec 2, another LITTLE GULL among 3,000+ BONAPARTE'S GULLS Dec 4, single PARASITIC JAEGERS Dec 3 & 4, up to 3 SNOWY OWLS, 2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS and a late NASHVILLE WARBLER at the salt pond thicket Nov 30, 125 SNOW BUNTINGS and 1-2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS, and a flyover COMMON REDPOLL Nov 30.

North Shore reports this week were of 3 KING EIDERS off Monmouth Beach Dec 1, RED-NECKED GREBE at Lake Como Nov 30, a BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE off Sea Bright Dec 1, single SNOWY OWLS at Roosevelt Ave in Deal Nov 30 and Elberon Dec 1, a second-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL at Lake of Lillies (Old Sam's Pond) in Point Pleasant Dec 3, and a first-cycle ICELAND GULL at Sylvan Lake in Avon Nov 28.

Assunpink WMA had a CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in the fields south of the spillway of Assunpink Lake Dec 2.

A SNOWY OWL was photographed in Lavallette Nov 28.

Island Beach State Park hosted up to 5 KING EIDERS and 1-2 SNOWY OWLS Nov 29-30.

Barnegat Light State Park had up to 11 KING EIDERS, COMMON EIDER, 8+ HARLEQUIN DUCKS, and a jaeger species Dec 1; a SNOWY OWL (possibly one of the Island Beach birds) was there through Dec 3.

The Holgate unit of Forsythe NWR had 2 SNOWY OWLS Dec 2.

Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR reports this week included 42 TUNDRA SWANS, a female REDHEAD at the entrance ponds, EURASIAN WIGEON, AMERICAN BITTERN, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, and 2 SNOWY OWLS. At nearby Brigantine Island 300 AMERICAN OYSTERCATCHERS, 2 WESTERN WILLETS, and 3 MARBLED GODWITS were noted Nov 30. A SNOWY OWL was photographed in Brigantine Nov 29. Also in Atlantic County was an immature male KING EIDER at the Longport Jetty Nov 29.

Burlington County reports this week included a YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT and RUSTY BLACKBIRD at Taylor's Refuge in Cinnaminson Nov 30. At Franklin Parker Preserve in Chatsworth 5 WINTER WRENS, 3 AMERICAN PIPITS, 12 PALM WARBLERS, 10 PINE WARBLERS, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and 12 AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS were noted Nov 29.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was found at Donaldson Park in Middlesex County Dec 3. Three RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue this week at the Oros Wildlife Preserve (Woodbridge River Watch) in Woodbridge Twp.

Up to 6 SANDHILL CRANES continue in Franklin Twp, Somerset County this week; the birds are usually found early/late in the day in the fields along Randolph or Weston Canal Roads. At nearby Colonial Park 3 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were noted Dec 5.

An amazing count of 23 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS was tallied at Troy Meadows Nov 30. Also in Morris County were 2 RED-NECKED GREBES on Boonton Reservoir Dec 1.

Bergen County reports this week included a BARNACLE GOOSE (photographed) at an undisclosed location, a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE at Overpeck County Park Nov 30, and a ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in Kearny Nov 30.

Hudson County sightings this week were of a drake EURASIAN WIGEON on Newark Bay at Old Tressel Dec 1, a SNOWY OWL at Liberty State Park Nov 29, an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER at Rutkowski Park in Bayonne Nov 30, and a NELSON'S SPARROW at Mill Creek Marsh in Secaucus Nov 28.

Two immature ICELAND GULLS were detected on Culver's Lake in Sussex County Dec 1.
