Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 12/9/1998
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Wed Dec 9 with reports of Review List species: BLACK-TAILED GULL, BLACK GUILLEMOT, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE and SWAINSON'S HAWK. Also reported were the results of a pelagic Dec 5, SHORTEARED OWL, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, NORTHERN SHRIKE, and local reports.

An adult BLACK-TAILED GULL (second report for the state) was found at 2nd Av. Jetty in Cape May, seen by several observers that day, and not since.

A BLACK GUILLEMOT (one of a handful for NJ) was found at Manasquan Inlet Dec 8; the bird was still there at 3 p.m., further west in the inlet, seen flying and swimming.

Two BARROW'S GOLDENEYE were reported at Merrill Creek Res. Dec 3 and 4, and a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL Dec 6. A SWAINSON'S HAWK was reported Dec 5 from Highbridge near Lake Solitude (Hunterdon Co.) Dec 5 (observed 10 minutes).

A pelagic on the Atlantis Dec 5 had 750 GANNET, 1 POMARINE JAEGER, 8 sp. of gulls (2 ICELAND, 1 GLAUCOUS, and 14 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKE), 1 RAZORBILL, 1 AM. WOODCOCK 45 mi. out, and 180 Com. Dolphin.

Two NORTHERN SHRIKES continue at Stony Brook-Millstone, 1 ad, and 1 imm. SHORT-EARED OWLS were on Cedar Dock Run Road off Rte. 9 south of Rte 72 on Dec 6, and a dark ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was at Manahawkin Dec 5.

Good numbers of RED-THROATED LOONS and HORNED GREBES were along Raritan Bay from South Amboy to Keansburg Dec 6; SNOW BUNTINGS, MEADOWLARKS, BOAT-TAILED GRACKLES and OLDSQUAW were also at Keansburg. At the Hackensack Meadows Environment Center in Lyndhurst Dec 5, there was an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in the parking lot of the center, a PALM WARBLER on the hill opposite the entrance, and a lingering SNOWY EGRET in the pool.
