Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 2/14/2008
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday February 14, 2008 with reports of BARNACLE GOOSE, BOHEMIAN WAXWING, TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, COMMON REDPOLL, seasonal and local reports of interest.

The Califon BARNACLE GOOSE was noted Feb 9 & 11, seen the first day along Rte 513 near the Echo Hill Farm and on the latter day along the Raritan River north of Califon (DeLorme P. 29, J-24).

At Sandy Hook 2-3 BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS continue, most recently seen along the bike path between the Boy Scout Camp parking lot and the Horseshoe Cove parking lot (Lot L) Feb 10. The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE continues in its usual spot around the east end of Randolph Drive and the "road to nowhere." Other sightings from the hook this week included 2-4 RAZORBILLS off lots B, D, and North Beach Feb 8-12; an adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL at North Beach Feb 9 and 2 RED CROSSBILLS at the Scout Camp Feb 11. The BARRED OWL was heard calling north of the scout camp Feb 12. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the bird sightings log there for daily reports.

North Shore reports this week included 2 RAZORBILLS at Manasquan Inlet Feb 9, EURASIAN WIGEON at Silver Lake in Belmar, a RAZORBILL at Shark River Inlet Feb 10, a BLACK-HEADED GULL at Manasquan Inlet Feb 9, and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at Sylvan Lake in Bradley Beach, Lake Como, and Lake Takanassee.

Barnegat Light State Park hosted 33 HARLEQUIN DUCKS and 3 RAZORBILLS this week.

A SHORT-EARED OWL was noted along the dikes at Brigantine NWR Feb 12.

Hunterdon County sightings were of a CACKLING GOOSE, 2 LESSER BLACK- BACKED GULLS and an ICELAND GULL at Spruce Run Reservoir Feb 10.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Great Swamp NWR near the Heronry Overlook on Pleasant Plains Road through Feb 9.

At Wallkill River NWR's Liberty Loop Trail 15 NORTHERN HARRIERS, up to 6 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, and 7 SHORT-EARED OWLS were observed Feb 9 & 11.

Two GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen at Lenape Park in Cranford Feb 8 & 12. The birds were seen in the vicinity of the dam near Springfield Ave. heading into Kenilworth.

Three ICELAND GULLS (one adult, two immatures) were observed at Newark's Weequaic Park Feb 12.

Twelve COMMON REDPOLLS were found at Garret Mountain Feb 8, viewed in the field near the basketball courts.

Up to 4 COMMON REDPOLLS were still visiting the feeders at New Jersey Audubon's Plainsboro Preserve through Feb 10.
