The WESTERN GREBE continues off the Monmouth Beach Cultural Center through Feb 10. An immature male KING EIDER was found in the Shrewsbury River off nearby Seacrest Ave Jan 9; possibly the same bird moved back over to the oceanside Feb 10. Other North Shore reports included a drake EURASIAN WIGEON off South Riverside Dr near Lakewood Rd/East End Ave bridge Feb 11, and a RED-NECKED GREBE at Shark River Marina Feb 10.
Sussex County sightings this week included a continuing raptor show at the Wallkill River NWR's Liberty Loop with ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and at least 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS; a dark-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was noted along Rte 206 near the Frankford School Jan 8.
Merrill Creek Reservoir hosted an impressive 50,000 SNOW GEESE Jan 9. At the nearby Alpha Grasslands a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was noted the same day.
Round Valley Reservoir sightings this week included WHITE-WINGED SCOTER, LONG-TAILED DUCK, 5 RED-NECKED GREBES, and a GLAUCOUS GULL. Also in Hunterdon County was a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK along Quakertown Rd near Pittstown Feb 8-9.
The NJ Meadowlands had 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS along Disposal Rd through Feb 9, two SNOWY OWLS at DeKorte Environment Center Feb 8, and 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS along Disposal Rd Feb 9.
In Somerset County 4 REDHEADS, 53 COMMON GOLDENEYES, and an ICELAND GULL were noted along the D&R Canal towpath in Franklin Twp Feb 6.
A drake EURASIAN WIGEON was detected at Marciante Jackson Millet Park in Elizabeth Feb 9-10.
An immature ICELAND GULL and a first-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL were noted this week at the Edison Boat Launch.
Mercer County sightings this week were of 5 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, LONG-TAILED DUCK, and RED-NECKED GREBE at the Rte 295 Scenic Overlook Feb 10; and a GRASSHOPPER SPARROW was photographed at Mercer County Park Northwest (Pole Farm) Feb 4.
Burlington County reports included LONG-TAILED DUCK, 8 GREATER SCAUP, CANVASBACK, and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER at Taylor's Refuge Feb 8; 68 COMMON GOLDENEYES at Riverton Feb 8; RED-NECKED GREBE and 7 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at Palmyra Cove Feb 9, and RED-NECKED GREBE, 3 ICELAND GULLS, and a GLAUCOUS GULL at Florence Jan 9.
Gloucester County birds noted this week included RED-NECKED GREBE, LONG-TAILED DUCK, and an impressive 36 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS at Red Bank Battlefield Park Feb 8; at Big Timber Creek RED-NECKED GREBE was found this week.
In Salem County, a SHORT-EARED OWL was noted along Featherbed Lane near Sharptown Feb 7 and a BREWER'S BLACKBIRD was reported from the same area Feb 9.
Atlantic County reports were of a hen KING EIDER and HARLEQUIN DUCKS off the end of Atlantic Ave in Longport Feb 13, GOLDEN EAGLES at Corbin City (McNamara WMA) Feb 9, and GOLDEN EAGLE and SNOWY OWL at Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR Feb 8 & 12.
A SNOWY OWL was seen from the end of Great Bay Blvd WMA Feb 9. Also in Ocean County this week were 4 KING EIDERS, 20+ HARLEQUIN DUCKS, and a first-cycle GLAUCOUS GULL at Barnegat Light State Park Feb 9 and a SHORT-EARED OWL at Manahawkin WMA (Stafford Ave) Feb 8.
