Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 2/17/1999
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Feb 17 with reports of Review List species including TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, ROSS'S GOOSE, and other species including GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, DOVEKIE, HARLEQUIN, BLACK-HEADED GULL, local reports and extra-limitals.

The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE persists among the cedar berries at Heislerville WMA on East Point Rd about 1.2 miles from Main St. On Feb 13, the bird was observed between 1:30 and 3:00 p.m.

The BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continues in Horse Shoe Cove, Sandy Hook. No reports this week of the white-winged gulls at I-lot.

A ROSS'S GOOSE was found Feb 13 among snows in Salem County at the intersection of Rtes. 45 and 40, where there has also been a large blackbird flock. A BLACK-HEADED GULL was present last week at the Salem Nuclear Plant.

A DOVEKIE was belatedly reported from Pt. Pleasant behind the Tiki Bar south of Manasquan Inlet on Feb 7. Up to 29 HARLEQUINS and 150 SNOW BUNTINGS were at Barnegat Jetty this week, with TURNSTONES, DUNLIN, BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS and PURPLE SANDPIPERS. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was reported at Merrill Creek Res. Feb 12 until dark, along with a good mix of waterfowl including REDHEAD and GREATER SCAUP and LESSER SCAUP.

Among various local reports this week were 400 COM. MERGANSER at Mercer County Park Lake; FOX SPARROW at Stony Brook-Millstone; 300 RUDDY DUCK and 15 SHOVELERS at Weequahic Park in Newark; two Harbor Seals in the Raritan River two miles above Driscoll Bridge at Raritan Center; a MERLIN on a steeple at Carlin Ave, Metuchen; a PEREGRINE on a tower at Lake Tappan; and a BALD EAGLE over Hillsborough along the Raritan.

Extralimitals this past week at Conowingo dam included SLATY-BACKED GULL early and late in the day, and also CALIFORNIA GULLS and THAYER'S GULLS. Take Rte 95 south to Newark DE, and Rte. 273 west to get there.
