This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Friday February 17, 2012 with reports of ROSS'S GOOSE, BLACK-HEADED GULL, ATLANTIC PUFFIN, NORTHERN SHRIKE, seasonal and local reports of interest.
The white morph ROSS'S GOOSE Continues along Good Springs Rd in Franklin Twp, Warren County in the large SNOW GOOSE flock. The birds are often found in the farm fields along Good Springs Rd 1-2 miles south of Broadway off Rte 57. A probable blue morph ROSS'S GOOSE was also seen in the flock this week as was a CACKLING GOOSE.
Also in Warren County was the SNOWY OWL at Merrill Creek Reservoir through Feb 15, usually found in the rocks below the main dam.
The NORTHERN SHRIKE continues in Boonton Twp this week through Feb 16. Look for the bird at the Johansen Memorial Fields; the bird is often found somewhere around the periphery.
Up to 14 REDHEADS were seen this week at the pond along Clark Drive in Mount Olive Twp.
Single GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were noted in Somerset County this week at the intersection of Rtes 567 and 629 in Neshanic Station Feb 10 and at Amwell Pond in Hillsborough Twp.
Great Piece Meadows hosted 100+ RUSTY BLACKBIRDS Feb 13. Also in Essex County was an ICELAND GULL at Port Newark, viewed from Doremus Ave.
Two ICELAND GULLS were noted at Johnson Park in Piscataway Feb 10.
An adult BLACK-HEADED GULL has been seen at South Amboy Feb 10-13.
Sandy Hook has continuing groups of RAZORBILLS, mostly seen from F-lot south this week, with a high of 9 there Feb 11. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was at the start of the Old Dune Trail Feb 17.
A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was noted at Thompson Park Feb 11. In nearby Colts Neck 2 CACKLING GEESE were found at the Colts Neck Municipal Complex ponds Feb 13. Possibly the same GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was at the municipal pond Feb 14.
Manasquan Inlet had 24 RAZORBILLS Feb 9.
Barnegat Inlet hosted a GLAUCOUS GULL and RAZORBILL Feb 9.
A birder aboard a research vessel tallied 11 NORTHERN FULMARS, 12 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 610 DOVEKIES, 7 ATLANTIC PUFFINS, 3 RAZORBILLS, and a COMMON MURRE at Tom's Canyon Feb 13. Another birder aboard a party boat out of Belmar found 4 NORTHERN FULMARS, 13 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 12 RAZORBILLS, and 58 DOVEKIES about 27 miles east of Shark River Inlet Feb 15.
Ninety-seven CANVASBACKS were tallied at Riverfront Landing in Toms River Feb 16.
A ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK was noted at Manahawkin WMA Feb 15.
A GOLDEN EAGLE was seen over Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR Feb 12. Also in Atlantic County at the Corbin City Impoundments were 2 Eurasian GREEN-WINGED TEAL and a drake EURASIAN WIGEON Feb 16.
Seven SANDHILL CRANES were noted at Mannington Marsh Feb 10. Also there Feb 11 was a CACKLING GOOSE.
