Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 2/22/2007
This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon Society for Thursday February 22, 2007 with reports of BARNACLE GOOSE, LE CONTE'S SPARROW, seasonal and local reports of interest, and a pelagic trip announcement.

A BARNACLE GOOSE has been present this week in West Cape May -- call the CMBO Birding Hotline for details.

A LE CONTE'S SPARROW was discovered at Abbott's Meadow WMA in Salem County Feb 17 & 21. The location in the DeLorme NJ Atlas is p. 60, M-14. While in cell L-14 take the road to the south that goes along the west side of the easternmost green block designating Abbott's Meadow WMA property. This is the road that heads south from immediately west of the ?CR 637? labeling in the DeLorme Atlas. Though not labeled, this is Abbott's Farm Rd. Immediately before the road bends sharply to the west (and approaches a private residence) there is a parking lot on the left (east) side of the road. Park here and walk east out into a field fringed with phragmites; loop around the north end of the phrags to get to the next field to the east. The Le Conte's was in the northeast corner of this field.

A male EURASIAN WIGEON was noted at Brigantine NWR Feb 18.

North Shore sightings this week were of a flock of 15 REDHEADS at Lake Takanassee and off nearby Pullman Ave; 3 Redheads at Marconi Rd, Shark River Estuary; the male HARLEQUIN DUCK off Clem Conover Blvd in Deal; single RED-NECKED GREBES at Manasquan Inlet, Shark River Inlet, and the Allenhurst jetties; single LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS at Twilight Lake in Bay Head and Wreck Pond; and a LAPLAND LONGSPUR in the dunes adjacent to Shark River Inlet.

At Sandy Hook a flock of HORNED LARKS, SNOW BUNTINGS and 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS have been present between lots B & C this week. A RED- NECKED GREBE was off C-lot Feb 21 and a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK Feb 18 may have been an early migrant. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at SHBO -- check the sightings log there for daily reports.

Assunpink Lake hosted a CACKLING GOOSE and RED-NECKED GREBE Feb 21.

Round Valley Reservoir hosted a variety of waterbirds this week including up to 20 REDHEADS, 2 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS, LONG-TAILED DUCK, 7 RED-NECKED GREBES, a third-year ICELAND GULL, and 17 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS. Also in Hunterdon County were 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, SHORT-EARED OWL, and AMERICAN PIPITS at Whitehouse Station Feb 20-22.

In Warren County a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK has been present at Oberly Road (Alpha Grasslands) and 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS were detected Feb 21. Five REDHEADS were found Feb 18 on Merrill Creek Reservoir.

In Sussex County the Layton NORTHERN SHRIKE was seen again Feb 17 near the intersection of Rtes 615 & 640 (DeLorme P. 18, I-10). A RED- NECKED GREBE and REDHEAD were noted at Swartswood Lake the same day. A GOLDEN EAGLE was observed at Van Campens Inn along Old Mine Rd Feb 17.

Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS continue in Bergen County this week. An adult present since early November remains at the Ridgewood duck pond on the north side of East Ridgewood Ave between Paramus Rd and Pershing Ave. Park in the lot between Areas B & C; the bird is active in the area between the restrooms and the pavilion. A second RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was noted at Saddle River County Park, Dunkerhook section at mile marker 1.8 of the Saddle River Trail.

Another pair of RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at Rahway River Park and are most often seen in the large trees near the restrooms.
