Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 2/24/1999
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Feb 24 with reports of Review List species: TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, ROSS'S GOOSE, THAYER'S Gull; and other species including NORTHERN SHRIKE, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, various WINTER GULLS, REDHEADS, early spring arrivals, a re-scheduled pelagic from Cape May and extralimital gulls.

The TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE continues at Heislerville WMA in Cumberland County on East Point Rd about 1.2 miles from Main St.

Several ROSS'S GEESE were reported in Salem County, two behind the County Hospital on Rte. 45 Feb 22, and another along Rte. 77 about two miles south of Pole Tavern. Two YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were reported around Salem County: one in Salem on Money Island Rd on Feb 22, and another in Sharptown Feb 20, along Swedesboro Rd south of Featherbed Lane. A BLACK-HEADED GULL was at the Salem Nuke Plant Feb 21.

This was the week of the gull: An adult THAYER'S GULL was the highlight of a field trip to Florence Feb 20, which also tallied 15-20 LESSER BLACKBACKS, 15 ICELANDS and 6 GLAUCOUS. Elsewhere, 2 ICELAND GULLS were at North Beach Pavilion, Sandy Hook Feb 20, along with a GLAUCOUS and a LESSER BLACKBACK at Spermaceti. A GLAUCOUS was on Lake Takanassee Feb 21, an ICELAND was on Old Sams Pond, Point Pleasant Feb 19, a LESSER BLACKBACK was at Manasquan Inlet Feb 21, and two others were on Herbert Rd, Assunpink Feb 19.

Assunpink Feb 19 also had two drake REDHEADS, RINGNECKS, HOODED MERGANSERS and COMMON MERGANSERS, HORNED GREBES, PIED-BILLED GREBES, WIGEON, RUDDIES and SCAUP. Colliers Mills had 5 TUNDRA SWANS Feb 19. Trenton Marsh Feb 21 had good numbers of PINTAILS and RINGNECKS, WOOD DUCK and WINTER WREN. Great Swamp had N. SHRIKE on Pleasant Plains Rd Feb 20-22, along with RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, returning WOOD DUCKS and HOODED MERGANSERS. Scherman Hoffman had WINTER WREN this week. Old Mine Brook Rd in Bernards had a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK Feb 21. A MEADOWLARK was singing at Lamington Church on Rte. 523 Feb 21.

Lake Parsippany has lots of waterfowl, including COM. MERGANSERS and BUFFLEHEAD; Round Valley Res. on Feb 20 had GREATER SCAUP, LESSER SCAUP, RUDDIES, RINGNECKS, 3 REDHEADS and HORNED GREBE. A "probable" PACIFIC LOON was reported from Manasquan Feb 20. Eleven HARLEQUINS were at Barnegat Feb 20.

The cancelled Feb 21 pelagic trip out of Cape May is re-scheduled for Sunday March 7 and will go if the captain gets at least 20 people. Same deal: $55, 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. For info and reservations, call 609-884-3939.

Extralimital gulls: The KELP GULL in Maryland continued as of Feb 20 at least; for update call the Maryland tape at 301-652-1088. Likewise, the SLATY-BACKED GULL at Conowingo Dam was also seen Feb 20. Best time is early or late in the day.
