This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday February 24, 2011 with reports of WESTERN GREBE, EURASIAN WIGEON, SANDHILL CRANE, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, COMMON REDPOLL, WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILL, seasonal and local reports of interest, and announcements.
A WESTERN GREBE was found off the south end of Seven Presidents Park in Long Branch Feb 20. Up to 7 WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS continue this week through Feb 23 at Seven Presidents. The birds are often found in the pines on the north side of the main entrance opposite the Lighthouse Ice Cream stand. They have also been seen in the large stand of pines by the maintenance yard. Please DO NOT enter the maintenance yard--you can view them better from the road outside of the yard.
Also at Seven Presidents that day were BLACK-HEADED GULL and 3-5 COMMON REDPOLLS have been seen there this week. Other North Shore sightings this week included single RED-NECKED GREBES off the Wreck Pond outfall Feb 21 and off Monmouth Beach Cultural Center Feb 22, a drake Harlequin Duck off Roosevelt Ave in Deal Feb 22, single first-cycle ICELAND GULLS at Manasquan Inlet and Deal Feb 19, and 5 COMMON REDPOLLS in the dunes at Shark River Inlet Feb 18. A flock of 42 COMMON REDPOLLS was observed at Sandy Hook near the salt pond Feb 18. AMERICAN WOODCOCKS are beginning to display on warm still evenings. A free, detailed birding map of Sandy Hook is available at SHBO; check the sightings log there for daily reports. At the nearby Oceanic Bridge on the Navesink River a flock of 10,000 GREATER SCAUP contained 2 REDHEADS this week.
Two ROSS'S GEESE were reported with a CANADA GOOSE flock at Shelter Cove Park in Toms River Feb 23.
Sightings from Brigantine NWR Feb 19-21 included 30+ TUNDRA SWANS, a drake EURASIAN WIGEON, 300 CANVASBACKS, 2-4 REDHEADS, a GOLDEN EAGLE over Jen's Trail, a light-morph ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, up to 6+ SHORT-EARED OWLS, BARRED OWL, and 3 COMMON REDPOLLS at the dog-leg. At nearby Motts Creek ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and SHORT-EARED OWL were observed Feb 21.
Two MARBLED GODWITS and 50 "Western" WILLETS were noted at Brigantine Island/Absecon Inlet Feb 20.
Salem County reports Feb 20 included a CACKLING GOOSE at Hancock's Bridge, 100+ TUNDRA SWANS, BLUE-WINGED TEAL and 3 SANDHILL CRANES at Mannington Marsh, and a COMMON REDPOLL at Mad Horse Creek WMA. YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS were noted this week at Mannington Marsh Feb 17, Pointers-Swedesboro Rd (DeLorme P. 61, C-21) Feb 20, and Fort Elfsborg Rd Feb 21.
Single RED-NECKED GREBES were noted in the Delaware River off Palmyra Feb 21 and Taylors Refuge Feb 21.
Three CACKLING GEESE were detected in the SNOW GOOSE flock along Rte 524 east of Allentown Feb 20.
The male HARLEQUIN DUCK remains on the Delaware River in Harmony Twp. The bird is in a flock of BUFFLEHEADS and was viewed off South Foul Rift Rd opposite the power plant. Morning offers the best light conditions.
The adult BLACK-HEADED GULL continues this week in Bayonne through Feb 18, viewed in the bay opposite Houlihan's Restaurant off Rte 440. Two COMMON REDPOLLS were found in Liberty State Park Feb 22.
The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER continues at the Ridgefield Duck Pond in Bergen County through Feb 23.
The Oil City Rd area of Wallkill River NWR had 12 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS and a SHORT-EARED OWL Feb 21.
