Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 2/27/2001
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Tue Feb 27 with reports of Review List GYRFALCON and several BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, and other reports of SNOWY OWL, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE, EUR. WIGEONS, SHORT-EARED OWL, ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, CLAY-COLORED SPARROW, local reports and seasonal reports of interest.

A White GYRFALCON was reported feeding on prey on Harter Road in Morris County near Great Swamp on Feb 22 before the snow. The bird was not reported since.

Three BARROW'S GOLDENEYES were reported this week. The Sandy Hook bird, not seen Feb 24, was reported Feb 27. A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was seen Feb 26 at East Point in Cumberland Co. in a flock of COMMON GOLDENEYE. Another was reported in the Liberty State Park (Jersey City) area Feb 27 in Caven Cove off Port Liberte. A SNOWY OWL was still at Liberty State Park as of Feb 27.

Three GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were reeported in a flock of Canadas in a farm field on Goritz Road in Hunterdon County on Feb 22; no reports since. A spectacular flock of 5000+ SNOW GEESE was on the ice on Merrill Creek Res. on Feb 26, along with the overwintering RING-NECKS, BUFFLEHEAD, and other ducks.

EURASIAN WIGEON was reported this week from Brig, and from three different areas in Long Branch, presumably the same bird in each instance. Other reports from the North Shore included HORNED LARKS at Sandy Hook on the Coast Guard base; REDHEAD at Lake Takanassee; and about 35 PURPLE SANDPIPERS off the pavilion boardwalk in Deal.

A CLAY-COLORED SPARROW was reported at Cape May Point Feb 26.

A SHORT-EAR was seen late in the day off Lightfield Road at Solberg airport Feb 24. ROUGH-LEGS continue on Pleasant Plains Road in Great Swamp. The RED-HEADED WOODPECKER is irregular at the heronry there.

Moving this week were large flocks of ROBINS, flocks of BLUEBIRDS, GRACKLES and REDWINGS.
