February 6 with reports of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, BOHEMIAN WAXWING,
BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest and pelagic
Two BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS were found in the state this week. The first was
found at Lord Stirling Park, Somerset Environmental Center Jan 30-31
around the pond behind the nature center building. Nearby Great Swamp
NWR had RED-SHOULDERED HAWK and YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER this week.
The BOHEMIAN WAXWING was noted at Island Beach State Park Feb 1-2 along
Reeds Road Trail and just north of the tidal pool blind. Reeds Road is
the first trail/parking area on the right after the entrance; the path
to the Tidal Pool Blind is opposite the first large parking lot on the
Three female and one male BREWER'S BLACKBIRDS were found in Salem County
Feb 1-2. They were seen feeding in a field with cattle just east of the
junction of routes 658 and 650 just north of Hancock's Bridge (DeLorme
P. 61, L-15).
A female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE was found at Conaskonk Point Feb 2. Also
there were 2 RED-NECKED GREBES, 1200 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 500 LONG-TAILED
DUCKS, AND ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK. A free "Where to bird along Raritan Bay"

Shark River Estuary continues to host numbers of waterbirds. Up to 2
EURASIAN WIGEONS have been along Riverside Drive through Feb 3. Other
birds found there over the weekend were RED-NECKED GREBE, 10 GREAT
CORMORANTS, REDHEAD, and 2 BALD EAGLES. A EURASIAN WIGEON was also found
on Lake Como in Belmar Feb 2. Manasquan Inlet had a GLAUCOUS GULL, 2
ICELAND GULLS and an alcid sp. Feb 1. Two RED-NECKED GREBES and 2
RAZORBILLS were seen from the beach in Spring Lake Feb 3 and a female
HARLEQUIN DUCK was off Newark Ave Feb 5. Another RAZORBILL was found in
Bayhead this week. A LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was on Lake Takanassee Feb
Barnegat Light Feb 1 had one KING EIDER and 7 COMMON EIDERS, 21
HARLEQUIN DUCKS, 3 REDHEADS, 150 PURPLE SANDPIPERS, 2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS,
50 SNOW BUNTINGS, and a COMMON REDPOLL. Three KING EIDERS were reported
there Feb 4.
Gulls at Florence Jan 31 included 2 ICELAND GULLS and 2 LESSER
BLACK-BACKED GULLS; also there ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK and BALD EAGLE.
A RED-NECKED GREBE was found on the Delaware River Feb 5, just north of
the Burlington-Bristol Bridge.
Round Valley Reservoir Jan 31-Feb 1 had 2 BALD EAGLES, 2 RED-SHOULDERED
HAWKS, 2 MERLINS, 12 RED-BREASTED NUTHATCHES, PURPLE FINCH, and 2 COMMON
Alpha Grasslands (Oberly Rd) this week had ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, 80 HORNED
LARK, and 1-2 LAPLAND LONGSPURS.
A flock of 70 COMMON REDPOLL were found in Worthington State Forest
along Old Mine Rd 3 miles north of Rt 80 Feb 1.
Single GLAUCOUS GULL and LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL and 3 ICELAND GULLS
were noted at the Sussex County Landfill Jan 31. The landfill is located
on the west side of Rt. 94 just north of the intersection with Rt. 15.
Clinton Road in the Pequannock Watershed had 2 COMMON RAVENS, 2 PINE
SISKINS, and six COMMON REDPOLLS over the weekend. Birds found at nearby
Weis Ecology Center in Ringwood this week included BARRED OWL, PILEATED
WOODPECKER, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH and up to 11 PINE SISKINS visiting the
