This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday February 9, 2012 with reports of THAYER'S GULL, WESTERN TANAGER, SNOWY OWL, NORTHERN SHRIKE, seasonal and local reports of interest.

A good candidate for a first-cycle THAYER'S GULL was photographed on the lake at Newark's Weequahic Park Feb 8.

The male WESTERN TANAGER continues through Feb 5 at Allaire State Park. Look for the bird along the paved bike path near the burned area northeast of the Allaire village parking lot.

The SNOWY OWL continues through Feb 6 at Merrill Creek Reservoir. Look for the bird in the rocks below the main dam. A COMMON REDPOLL was a fly-by there Feb 8. Also in Warren County was an adult ROSS'S GOOSE in a large SNOW GOOSE flock along Good Springs Rd in Franklin Twp.

The Boonton NORTHERN SHRIKE continues at Johansen Memorial Fields through Feb 5. Look for the bird in the trees around the periphery of the baseball field.

NJ Meadowlands sightings this week included the EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL at Mill Creek Marsh Feb 5, and DeKorte Environment Center hosted 200 CANVASBACKS and an AMERICAN BITTERN the same day. An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER continues along the Transco Trail through Feb 7.

Four SANDHILL CRANES continue this week through Feb 5 along Randolph Rd in Franklin Twp, Somerset County. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was noted along Schoolhouse Rd in Franklin Twp Feb 8.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen at the feeders at Scherman Hoffman Wildlife Sanctuary in Bernardsville Feb 8.

Single RAZORBILLS were noted this weekend from Sandy Hook, Roosevelt Ave in Deal, Manasquan Inlet, and Barnegat Inlet.

Two SHORT-EARED OWLS were detected along Stafford Ave Feb 4.

Forsythe (Brigantine) NWR reports this week included GOLDEN EAGLE, EASTERN PHOEBE, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, and 2 COMMON REDPOLLS by the entrance road bridge.

Brigantine Island/Absecon Inlet sightings Feb 4-6 included 20+ MARBLED GODWITS, 80 WESTERN WILLETS, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER, and 2 HARLEQUIN DUCKS Feb 6.

Up to 14 SANDHILL CRANES have been frequenting the Mannington Marsh area this week, with most sightings from the Rte 45 bridge or along Sunset and Nimrod Roads. A CACKLING GOOSE and a ROSS'S GOOSE were found in a large SNOW GOOSE flock along Gordon Rd Feb 7.

A pelagic trip out of Wildwood Crest Feb 4 tallied 16 NORTHERN FULMARS, 9 BLACK-LEGGED KITTIWAKES, 700 DOVEKIES, 40 RAZORBILLS, 7 COMMON MURRES, and 18 ATLANTIC PUFFINS.
