Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 3/13/1996
This is the voice of NJ Audubon for Wednesday, March 13, 1996, at noon, with reports of ROSS' GOOSE, COMMON REDPOLL, REDHEAD, RED-NECKED GREBE, EURASIAN WIGEON, seasonal migrants and a conservation alert.

A dark ROSS' GOOSE was reported in Salem County on Commissioner's Pike (Rte. 581) south of Rte. 40 March 12. Also in Salem County, a EURASIAN WIGEON was at Mannington Marsh during the week. COMMON REDPOLLS were reported this week from Morristown, and from several backyards in Randolph.

REDHEADS were reported this week on Lake Takanassee in Long Branch, Lake Assunpink and Wreck Pond. RED-NECKED GREBES were reported from Kearny East in the Hackensack River and also from the Belmar marina at Shark River. The Sandy Hook birds were not reported this week, but may still be there. Neither of the two GR. WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were reported this week, nor was the Scudder falls BARROW'S GOLDENEYE.

Migrants reported this week were MEADOWLARK; HORNED LARK (biggest flock 100 on Gordon Rd. off 539 near Assunpink); FOX SPARROW; BLUEBIRD, TREE SWALLOW, GREAT BLUE HERON, HOODED MERGANSERS and COMMON MERGANSERS; RING-NECKED DUCK, SHOVELER and GADWALL; KILLDEER; TURKEY VULTURES, BLACK VULTURES, REDTAILS and COOPER'S HAWK.

Conservation Alert: Please call President Clinton at 202-456-1111 or fax him at 202-456-2883 and tell him to end salvage logging in the National Forests, and to end the moratorium on listing endangered species. Urge him to insist that Congress repeal both of these bad riders, and also to repeal the rider that removes EPA oversight over wetlands permit decisions.

Please also call your Senators at 202-224-3121 and ask them to support the Bradley/Boxer bill (S-1595) to repeal completely the salvage logging rider. Please also continue to call your House members as per the two previous alerts at 202-224-3121 to sign onto the Morella letter urging an end to the moratorium on endangered species listing; and also to support the Furse/Morella bill in the House to repeal the salvage logging rider. See last week's alerts for details. Many thanks for your help.
