Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 3/20/2001
This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Tue Mar 20 with reports of Review List BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, ROSS'S GOOSE, and other reports of SANDHILL CRANE, EUR. GREEN-WINGED TEAL, EUR. WIGEON, RED-NECKED GREBE, seasonal arrivals and local reports.

As is normal this time of year, much of the birding acivity focussed on Salem County. A female BREWER'S BLACKBIRD was video-taped at the Kings H'way cattle pens Mar 17 just south of Featherbed Lane in Sharptown (not seen Mar 19). Also at Sharptown Mar 17-18 were two ROSS'S GEESE; the number went to 4 Mar 19. Seven SANDHILL CRANES were at Bostwick Lake Mar 18 (two on Mar 19). Two EUR. WIGEON were at the Rte 45 bridge at Mannington Marsh on Mar 18. Arrivals in the Salem area included PECTORAL SANDPIPER, BLUE-WINGED TEAL, YELLOWLEGS, and GREAT EGRET.

A good waterfowl flight Mar 17-18 put lots waterfowl into Merrill Creek Res, including GREATER SCAUP, LESSER SCAUP, 6 HORNED GREBES, 4 REDHEADS, lots of dabblers, and seasonal arrivals like PHOEBE, WOODCOCK, FIELD SPARROW, and MOURNING CLOAK (also in Randolph). The SNOW GEESE dropped to a paltry hundreds count Mar 17, but grew to a respectable 4 to 5 thousand Mar 19. Round Valley-Spruce Run had 18 waterfowl Mar 17, with 45 GREATER SCAUP and 10 CANVASBACK at Spruce Run and OLDSQUAW at Round Valley. TREE SWALLOWS were also in Spruce Run.

Paulinskill Lake had a RED-NECKED GREBE Mar 18. Lake Parsippany had thousands of waterfowl Mar 18 with RING-NECKS topping the list, and a few REDHEADS. Oradell Res had 500 COMMON MERGANSER, 5 LESSER SCAUP and 20 CANVASBACK Mar 19. One EUR. GREEN-WINGED TEAL was at the HQ pond in Great Swamp on Pleasant Plains Road Mar 18. Assunpink had 100 RING-NECKS Mar 18, and Mercer Co. Park had 100+ COM. MERGANSERS Mar 18 also. Audubon's Old Farm Sanctuary Mar 18 had WOODCOCK, GREAT HORNED OWL and the first WOOD TURTLE of the season.
