This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday March 22, 2012 with reports of SANDHILL CRANE, SNOWY OWL, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, BLUE GROSBEAK, seasonal and local reports of interest.

A female YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was among a large mixed-species blackbird flock along Rte 202 just south of the Columbus Auction near the Mercer Sod Farm Mar 18.

Two SANDHILL CRANES were noted at Mannington Marsh in Salem County Mar 20.

A RAZORBILL was still frequenting Manasquan Inlet Mar 20.

Reports from Sandy Hook this week included an AMERICAN BITTERN at north pond and 21 RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS over the Migration Watch Mar 19, RED-NECKED GREBE off the ferry terminal Mar 18, PIPING PLOVERS at north beach, and a large sea duck flock containing 220 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and 800 LONG-TAILED DUCKS off F-lot Mar 19. Migrants recorded Mar 22 included 3 BROWN THRASHERS, 35 HERMIT THRUSHES, 2 WINTER WRENS, 6 PINE WARBLERS, and RUSTY BLACKBIRD. A SANDHILL CRANE was seen along Weston Canal Rd in Franklin Twp, Somerset County Mar 19.

An excellent count of 6 ICELAND GULLS was noted in a field off Rte 78 in Clinton Twp, Hunterdon County this week. Another ICELAND GULL was found at Spruce Run Reservoir Mar 21.

The SNOWY OWL continues at Merrill Creek Reservoir in the rocks below the main dam through Mar 19.

Fifty-seven WILSON'S SNIPE were tallied from the Friend's blind at Great Swamp NWR Mar 16.

An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was seen at Mill Creek Marsh in Secaucus Mar 18.

An early "overshoot" adult male BLUE GROSBEAK visited feeders at Greenbrook Sanctuary in Alpine Mar 15-16.
