This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday, Mar. 24, 1993, at noon, with reports of EARED GREBE, RUFF, EURASIAN WIGEON, ICELAND, GLAUCOUS, & LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, LAPLAND LONGSPUR, and seasonal and local reports.
An EARED GREBE was seen with 3 Horned Grebes on the way into Stone Harbor March 21, in the roadside lagoon. From exit 10 off the Garden State Parkway, proceed into Stone Harbor just before the first light there is a chained-off parking lot near a motel. The birds were right off that lot March 21.
The RUFF appeared at Pedricktown March 23, a basic bird seen from the causeway. High tides this weekend: Saturday, March 27 about 5 am and 5 pm; Sunday, about 6 am and 6 pm. A EURASIAN WIGEON was present this week at Mannington Marsh. An ICELAND GULL and 60 COM. GOLDENEYE were on Merrill Creek Reservoir March 20. An ICELAND GULL was also at North Beach, Sandy Hook, on March 22 and a GLAUCOUS GULL was at Manasquan Inlet also March 22. Ten HARLEQUINS continue on Barnegat Inlet. OSPREY & HOODED MERGANSER were at Manahawkin this week.
A SHORT-EARED OWL was still on Ridge Rd. off Rt. 519 in Hunterdown Co. north of Frenchtown. About 400 HORNED LARKS were at Alpha, Warren Co., on March 20, with 2 SNOW BUNTING & 1 LAPLAND LONGSPUR mixed in. Look on Oberly Rd. on the bare patches in the cornfields. Round Valley on March 20 had 2 BALD EAGLES, HORNED GREBE, OLDSQUAW, COM. LOON, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER & COM. MERGANSER, RINGNECKS, BUFFLEHEADS, and COOPER'S HAWK. Lake Musconnetcong on March 20 had REDHEAD, Hooded Merganser, Com. Merganser, Canvasback, Ringneck and Bufflehead. EURASIAN WIGEON was still on Lake Takanassee on March 21. DeMotte's Pond in Clinton had 50 Ringnecks and other waterfowl on March 20.
Clyde Potts Reservoir in Mendham had 52 Com. Mergansers on March 22; also in Mendham, 35 Turkeys were on Mountain Ave. near Clyde Potts the same day. Lake Solitude March 20 had Com. Merganser and Green-winged Teal. Cranbury Lake on Rt. 206 had Hooded Mergansers. The lake at Ryder College (Lawrenceville) had Hooded Merganser and Redhead this week. Great Swamp on March 22 had BARRED OWL in the usual place on the elbow on Pleasant Plains Rd., Ringnecked Duck and Hooded Merganser. Great Blue Herons are on the nest in the Swamp, also in Troy Meadows and also at the Swamp are hundreds of Wood Ducks, Phoebe, Brown Creeper, Fox Sparrow, Winter Wren, and Purple Finch.
White-crowned Sparrows were at Thompson Park this week in Monmouth Co., and also on Suydam Rd. in Franklin Township, Somerset Co. A BALD EAGLE was also in Franklin Twp. on March 21. LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Johnson Park, Highland Park this week and also in Belmar at the MacDonald's. Farrington Lake in E. Brunswick had Wood Duck, Com. and Hooded Mergansers, and Ring-necked Duck this week.
