Thursday March 24, 2005 with reports of BARROW'S GOLDENEYE, BARNACLE
GOOSE, LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE, ROSS'S GOOSE, SANDHILL CRANE, seasonal and
local reports of interest and announcements.
A LOGGERHEAD SHRIKE was found at Big Brook Park in Marlboro Mar 22-23.
From the intersection of Rte 79 & 520 head east on Rte 520 about a half
mile and turn right into the park, which is signed Camp Arrowhead."
Park near the fork in the road but do not block the gate. Follow the
right fork (a paved path) on foot for about a mile to a T intersection
and a collapsed barn foundation. The bird was seen in trees near the
foundation and in the privet hedge just before the T. Please report any
further sightings of this bird (DeLorme P. 44, F-4).
The female BARROW'S GOLDENEYE continued in Sandy Hook's Horseshoe Cove
Mar 22 along with 300 COMMON GOLDENEYES, 200+ LONG-TAILED DUCKS, and a
first-year ICELAND GULL Mar 19. A RED-NECKED GREBE was seen in
Horseshoe Cove Mar 19. The drake EURASIAN WIGEON was noted Mar 22 in
Spermaceti Cove. Early passerine migrants at the hook Mar 23 included
20+ FOX SPARROWS and 12 EASTERN MEADOWLARKS.
North Shore reports Mar 21 included single first-year ICELAND GULLS at
Manasquan Inlet and Roosevelt Ave in Deal, and the drake EURASIAN
WIGEON on Wreck Pond. The drake EURASIAN GREEN-WINGED TEAL was sighted
again at Lake Takanassee west of Van Court Ave Mar 22.
Barnegat Light State Park had 20+ HARLEQUIN DUCKS, all 3 scoters, an
immature male COMMON EIDER, and PURPLE SANDPIPERS Mar 22.
Salem County sightings Mar 19-20 included 3 ROSS'S GEESE in the SNOW
GOOSE flock off Featherbed Lane in Sharptown, and TUNDRA SWAN and
BLUE-WINGED TEAL at Pedricktown Marsh. Mannington Marsh hosted
BLUE-WINGED TEAL, 100+ COMMON MERGANSERS, several BALD EAGLES, 30-40
WILSON'S SNIPE, and a fly-by SANDHILL CRANE viewed from the Salem WMA
observation deck. An adult LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was found in a
field just south of Mannington Marsh.
Florence had 13 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS and 2 Iceland Gulls from
River's Edge Park just south of the boat launch Mar 22.
A drake EURASIAN WIGEON was found in the Hackensack Meadowlands in
Sawmill Creek WMA Mar 22 (DeLorme P. 32, H-12).
Two SHORT-EARED OWLS were noted at the Great Swamp NWR Mar 17 opposite
the Friends of GSNWR" house on Pleasant Plains Road, with one sighted
again on Mar 23. Two RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were along Pleasant Roads
A BARNACLE GOOSE (origin unknown) was found among the thousands of
geese at Merrill Creek Reservoir Mar 19-20. A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE and a CACKLING GOOSE were found there as well, viewed from the
tower outlet Mar 22.
