This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Mar 27 with reports of review list THAYER'S and CALIFORNIA GULLS, ROSS'S GOOSE, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, EARED GREBE, and other reports of RUFF, SANDHILL CRANE, SNOWY OWL, GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE and seasonal and local reports.
March 24 at Florence, several observers reported an adult THAYER'S GULL, a probable CALIFORNIA GULL, ICELAND and GLAUCOUS GULLS, 2 hybrid GLAUCOUS x HERRING GULLS, and 30 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS.
In Salem County, 2 observers found 2 ROSS'S GEESE at the Featherbed Lane pond in Sharptown and the female BREWER'S BLACKBIRD in the cattle pen on Kings Highway on Mar 25; and later 4 CRANES were at Bostwick Lake, and a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was with Snow Geese north of Bostwick lake on Watson's Canhouse Road 1.7 mi south of the Junction with Rte 611 in Salem Co., also Mar 25.
The season's first RUFF, a white and chestnut bird, was at mile marker 1 on Rte 45 north of the town of Salem, below Mannington Marsh on Mar 25. The bird was on the right heading south into Salem; it was seen thru Mar 27 by several observers, occasionally on the other side of the road.
The two SNOWY OWLS are still at Liberty State Park as of Mar 25.
An EARED GREBE was reported Mar 25 at Horseshoe Cove, Sandy Hook. Observers are cautioned that molting HORNED GREBES can be very confusing birds.
Seven COMMON LOONS were on Merrill Creek Mar 26. Over 100 RUDDY DUCKS were on Assunpink with other ducks Mar 24, and 250 WAXWINGS were seen that day. Over 2000 WAXWINGS were on Sandy Hook Mar 24, as were lots of SNOW GEESE overhead, and migrant TREE SWALLOWS, GREAT BLUE HERONS, GREAT EGRET, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, KILLDEER, KESTRELS, RED-SHOULDERS, WOODCOCK, ROBINS and JUNCOS.
Scherman Hoffman Mar 25 had WINTER WREN and HERMIT THRUSH along the river. MEADOWLARKS were at the Elks Club on Pompton lake in Wayne on Mar 25.
PHOEBES, TREE SWALLOWS, COMMON MERGANSER, GREEN-WINGED TEAL and FOX SPARROW were reported moving this week.
