This is the Voice of NJ Audubon for Wed Mar 4 with reports of
COM. EIDER, HARLEQUIN, EUR. WIGEON, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD,
REDPOLL, seasonal reports and local reports of interest.
Six HARLEQUIN, 3 COM. EIDER, HORNED LARK and SNOW BUNTING were seen
at Barnegat Inlet Feb 28; the eider, including one imm. male, were
inside the inlet in the bay. A black-phase ROUGHLEG was seen nearby
at Lake Manahawkin. An EURASIAN WIGEON was with AM. WIGEON in a
small pond near Paulins Kill Lake March 2, at the intersection of
Junction Rd. and Rte. 622, the Swartswood Road.
There was a report of 70 COM. REDPOLLS from a backyard feeder in
Boonton Twp., the only finch report of the week. In the exotic
department, a EUROPEAN GOLDFINCH was at a feeder in Whippany during
the week. A male YELLOW HEADED BLACKBIRD was at Hancock's Bridge,
Salem Co., on Poplar St off Front St on Feb 25.
At Overpeck March 1, there was a PALM WARBLER along with other
seasonal birds. Sandy Hook Feb 28 had MEADOWLARK, FOX SPARROW,
migrant blackbirds and KILLDEER near the Garden, and good numbers
of COM. GOLDENEYE and HORNED GREBE. PURPLE MARTIN was in Cape May
this week along with the first LAUGHING GULL.
Great Swamp has RED-HEADED WOODPECKER, TREE SWALLOW, WOOD DUCK,
PINTAIL, RING-NECKED DUCK, HOODED MERGANSER, AMERICAN WOODCOCK and
WILD TURKEY along Pleasant Plains Road., and RUSTY BLACKBIRD at the
Short Blind and elsewhere around the refuge.
The North Shore on Feb 28 had both LOONS scattered from Sandy Hook
to Spring Lake, and numbers of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS and
BUFFLEHEAD on the ponds.
