This is Scott Barnes with the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Thursday April 12, 2012 with reports of WHITE-FACED IBIS, LITTLE GULL, YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD, seasonal and local reports of interest.

Three WHITE-FACED IBIS were photographed at Forsythe NWR (Brigantine) Apr 9. The birds were seen near the gull pond tower. At least one WHITE-FACED IBIS was still there Apr 12 in the northwest corner of the northwest pool. Other birds noted at Brig this week included AMERICAN BITTERN, 2 CASPIAN TERNS, and a CLIFF SWALLOW.

Two LITTLE GULLS (one adult and one immature) were found at the Morgan Ave Mudflats (aka South Amboy) Apr 6; an adult was also there Apr 7. More information about birding this site can be found at http://ebird.org/content/nj

Sandy Hook reports this week included 1-2 AMERICAN BITTERNS at north pond Apr 8-10, 31 NORTHERN HARRIERS Apr 9 and 264 SHARP-SHINNED HAWKS Apr 10 at the Migration Watch, 25 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS, 5 WINTER WRENS, and 3 FOX SPARROWS. Hunterdon County reports this week included an AMERICAN BITTERN at Assiscong Marsh and a YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD was found in Holland Twp on Apr 12. The bird was near the intersection of Rte 519 and Church Rd.

A WHIP-POOR-WILL was heard in Great Swamp NWR Apr 11 and 2 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS were found in adjacent Lord Stirling Park the same day.

Sightings from Garret Mountain this week included a good flight of passerines Apr 10 including 25+ YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERS, 4 WINTER WRENS, 12 BROWN CREEPERS, 30 HERMIT THRUSHES, 8 PINE WARBLERS, 10 PALM WARBLERS, and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH.

A YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER was found at Flatbrook-Roy WMA in Sussex County Apr 12.

A VESPER SPARROW was noted at Glenhurst Meadows Apr 7.

A RED-NECKED GREBE was found at Liberty State Park Apr 8.

A LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was noted along Mingamahome Brook in Allaire State Park Apr 10.
