Voice of New Jersey Audubon - 4/14/1993
This is the Voice of New Jersey Audubon for Wednesday, April 14, 1993, at noon, with reports of PACIFIC LOON, COMMON BLACK-HEADED GULLS, RUFF, SANDHILL CRANE, CASPIAN TERN, EURASIAN WIGEON, LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL, BALD EAGLE, and local and seasonal reports of interest. The PACIFIC LOON, in winter plumage, was still at Manasquan Inlet as of April 11. Three BLACK-HEADED GULLS, one sub-adult, two immatures, were at S. Amboy on April 7 among 150 Bonaparte's Gulls. A Pectoral Sandpiper was also there on April 11. RUFFS at Pedricktown were reported this week as follows: one at the bridge on Pedricktown-Harrisonville Road on April 9; and one flew over the causeway at 4 PM April 10, but the bird did not land. Also in Salem Co. April 10, EURASIAN WIGEON was at Mannington Marsh; LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was at Richman's ice cream factory on Rt. 40, Sharptown; and a CASPIAN TERN, newly arrived, was on Rt. 540 at Mannington Marsh. A SANDHILL CRANE flew over Mauricetown, Cumberland Co., on April 13. Two immature BALD EAGLES were reported over Princeton during the week. COMMON LOONS were reported this week on Round Valley, Spruce Run, and Clyde Potts Reservoirs. Sandy Hook this week had PINE WARBLER, GANNET, PEREGRINE, RED-THROATED LOON, HORNED GREBE, numbers of BONAPARTE'S GULLS, an ICELAND GULL, and numbers of RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS. Great Swamp on April 12 had a good flight, with numerous PALM WARBLERS, MYRTLE WARBLER, PINE WARBLER, RUSTY BLACKBIRD, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, RING-NECKED DUCK, and numbers of GREEN WINGED TEAL. PILEATED WOODPECKERS were reported this week at Lenape Park in Cranford, Lake Mohawk in Sparta, and Scherman=Hoffman Sanctuaries in Bernardsville, which also has TURKEY and LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH. A CATBIRD was in Parsippany on April 7. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS were reported on Watchung Lake this week. A GLOSSY IBIS was on Roxbury Pond on April 11. Lake Solitude near High Bridge had GREEN-WINGED TEAL and BUFFLEHEAD; WOODCOCK were widely reported this week.
